16th Annual Performance of “Journey with Jesus” to be Performed at St. Francis of Assisi Church
“Journey with Jesus to Calvary,” is a play that begins with Jesus entering Jerusalem riding a donkey, and the crowd giving him a royal, joyous welcome, celebrating him as the Messiah. They enthusiastically spread their cloaks on the road and wave palm branches, shouting "Hosanna!" to honor him.
Portions of the play reflect on each character’s own interpretation, how they might have felt, as is the case of Barabbas who was released by Pilate instead of Jesus during the Passover festival. The Bible gives no clue as to what happened to Barabbas after his release; however, during the play Barabbas follows from a distance and observes Jesus carrying the cross and his ultimate crucifixion. Barabbas has to decide whether to surrender to God in grateful acknowledgement of what Christ has done for us or spurn the gift and continue living apart from the Lord. His story parallels with all sinners and the decision left to us.
Many of the characters portrayed in the play, including Judas, Peter, John, the Centurion, Simon of Cyrene, Veronica and others believe the production is a ministry of sorts, with the goal “to bring people closer to Jeus.” Some have shared, “it has helped them grow spiritually in ways they could not have anticipated.” Mary, the mother of Jesus, moves us beyond tears by transforming sorrow into a "river of mercy" and a beacon of hope. She acknowledges that this was Jesus’ destiny, to die for the sins of all.
The play is in its 16th year of being produced by the parishioners of St. Francis of Assisi. Unique costumes are used for bringing this performance to life. As is the case with the soldiers, their garb enhances the storytelling, and highlights specific character traits, creating a powerful visual impact. People of all ages are participating as actors, behind the scenes, and choir members.
Performances are scheduled for Wednesday, March 25 at 7:00pm, Friday and Saturday, March 27 and 28 at 7:30pm, and Palm Sunday, March 29 at 1:00pm at the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church located at 44055 State Hwy 238, Freeport, MN, located 10 miles north of Albany on Hwy 238 or 5 miles south of Upsala on Hwy 238.
