The three days leading up to Easter, or the Triduum, are Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday. These, taken together with Easter, are the high point of the Church Year, as Christ’s sacrifice for us is the summit of the Christian life. It’s a lot of church. Depending on what is available at your church or in your area, you might be talking about three to five services, potentially up to 10 hours of time in the pew, between this Thursday and Sunday. It’s a big sacrifice of time, especially if you work full-time, have small children, have difficulty getting out of the house or have a full social calendar. But it’s a wonderful opportunity to feed your faith during the season of the Church Year where the crucial message of Christianity — the cross of Christ for you — is front and center.

This week, log off social media, off streaming, off browsing and shopping, off generally killing time, and spend that time in church. If you have a hard time driving at night, see if someone at church will drive you. If you have rambunctious little ones, know that God wants them there, too, even if they’re squirming, giggling or crying. If you’re tired after a long day of work, know that God comes to give you rest from all the weariness of this world. If it means cancelling or rescheduling plans, know that your schedule is a testament to your faith. If you’re mocked for spending “too much time at church,” know that Christ was likewise mocked. If you’re on the fence, if you’re nervous, if you’re worried about going to a service you’ve never attended before, know that the whole company of heaven will rejoice at your presence. And if you can’t make it because of work or illness or something else, find some time this week to meditate on Christ’s Passion and His death for the forgiveness of your sins.

Log off and go to Holy Week services at your church this week. Log off and spend that time where Christ has promised to deliver the fruits of the cross to you in His Word and Sacrament.

Our history...

The history of Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church predates 1843. In those years worship services were held irregularly in Freemansburg. With the construction of a one-story church in that year, worship services began to be held on a regular basis with Lutherans, Reformed and Moravian all participating. It was known as the “Communion Church of Freemansburg.” Even with a building in which to worship, Lutheran worship services were still only held when a Lutheran pastor was available. However, in 1859, the Lutherans organized and adopted a constitution. There were 61 charter members. They continued to worship in the “Communion Church of Freemansburg” until 1875 when the Lutherans and Reformed built a new church known as “Trinity Union Church of Freemansburg”. The Lutherans and Reformed dissolved their union in 1902 at which time the Lutherans reorganized as “Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church of Freemansburg.” They built a new church in 1904, which is where they continue to worship today. In 2002 they joined the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod and are currently served by Interim Pastor, the Rev. Donald L. Brand.
