A midweek thought from Pastor Spencer during this season of Lent:
"About 25 years ago, I attended a seminar by a theology professor who wanted preachers to accompany the cultural shift he saw occurring from a text-based reading culture to an image-based electronic culture. He saw this as an overall positive shift, and some of his predictions about church life in this cultural change have come true. But I remained skeptical about the desirability of the church accommodating this change. The exercise of literacy has been central to the church's identity. Books replaced scrolls in the ancient world in large part due to their use in church. The printed word and spread of literacy in Europe were central elements for the rise of Anabaptist faith and Protestant churches in general. Some have argued that the exercise of reading for broad and ongoing education is essential to an egalitarian republic accountable to citizens engaged in deliberation and debate together. I was reflecting on this as I read with appreciation this recent column by Russell Moore in Christianity Today: https://www.christianitytoday.com/2026/01/the-church-needs-to-recover-the-primacy-of-gods-word/
The writer exhorts us not to let summaries and media from ChatGPT and YouTube divert us from the practice of direct, immersive study of the Bible. It's why we listen so much to the scriptures in worship, use the Bible in our praying and singing, and work at making space in our lives for regular, extended attention to and reflection on the Bible together. Moore writes, "The very idea of the book is burning down all around us. But this one book, our Book, is a story inhabited by God himself. Even as it burns, it is not consumed. And out of the fire, if you listen carefully enough, you can still hear a voice." I look forward to reading and listening with you in our study and worship!"
