On our last day of mission work, we again split into groups for different projects. Some of us went to the Parish’s rehab and substance abuse clinic to work with patients. Others made friends and helped at a local school. Fr. Rich took to blessing 18 more homes in the morning.

In the afternoon, we visited the University of Piura, a Catholic college in the care of Opus Dei. We also had the privilege of celebrating Mass in their beautiful chapel.

One of the most interesting things about the parish of Santisimo Sacramento in which we’ve been serving is the breadth of the care they provide for the poor. In addition to a full schedule of sacred things like Mass, confessions, adoration, faith formation etc, they also: build houses, run hospitals and a clinic and an orphanage, a rehab clinic, a nursing home, a Catholic boarding school, a vocational/technical trade school, food and clothing assistance, and about 40 chapels scattered throughout the poorest neighborhoods in Piura. They serve 50,000+ Piurans, daily. Friends, if you want to see the Church as the Body of Christ fully alive, just visit Santisimo in Piura.

Please pray for us and those we had the privilege of befriending and serving as we return home today!

Our second-to-last day on mission in Peru was spent doing many good things: Fr. Rich and Fr. Andrew (a priest from Memphis) spent the morning in Piura’s largest hospital caring for the sick. Meanwhile, a crew spend an arduous time making concrete and pouring a floor for a house. Another crew altogether spent time at the market buying supplies and delivering them to families. Last, some worked in the free clinic at the parish.

In the afternoon, some taught English at a local school, others visited and assisted the vocational/technical school, and Fr. Rich blessed houses in a neighborhood.
Keep the prayers coming, please! Santisimo Sacramento - Piura

Our mission work today was spent building a new home for a family in the Piuran neighborhood of Buenos Aires. Many (possibly most) families in Piura live in single story homes made of whatever materials they can afford. Typically, the floors are bare earth and running water and power are rare. Concrete and brick is a luxury.

After demolishing the old home, we replaced it with what is essentially a Piuran starter-set home: bamboo walls and pillars for breath-ability and durability (it’s the desert and temperatures are regularly in the 90’s in the winter!), a tin roof to keep the infrequent rain and frequent sun off, and some rooms inside for privacy. Best of all, it had a door that locks.

The family we helped was profoundly grateful, and our group was moved by the opportunity to serve Christ by serving them. It’s quite humbling to consider that we replaced and built a typical home here in a single day.

In the evening, we joined the community of San Patricio for Mass, a friendly bunch.

Today inspired us to resolve to continue taking stock of how blessed we are… and to take a look around at those who lack those blessings and do something concrete to help them. We hope you will feel inspired to do the same, serving our Lord in the poor.

Today marked our first complete day of mission work with Santisimo Sacramento parish in Piura. Each day, the parish carries out tons of projects to serve the 50,000+ people in their boundaries who have extreme need. We were privileged to help with a small part of those works of mercy.

In both the morning and afternoon, we began with prayer and then broke into smaller groups to help with different projects. Fr. Rich and a few students spent both shifts making communion and anointing calls to the infirm, first in the city and then in the neighborhood of La Legua. Meanwhile, in the morning some others visited the local orphanage to hold and play with the kids there. Relationship is such an important part of our mission work, especially here. It provides something that no money can buy.

In the afternoon, several of us spent time in the parish medical clinic, while another small group spent time on “Ropa” duty, distributing over 1500 clothing items to a neighborhood and school community. We capped the day with Mass, evening prayer, and then went for a walk to get some ice cream. Please keep the prayers coming! Tomorrow we start construction on a house!

Happy Pentecost! Today was our first day on mission in Piura, Peru. We began the day with Mass at the mission church of Santa Monica in the neighborhood of Los Polvorines and had the chance to pray with the lovely community. Then, we spent the remainder of the morning making house visits in the neighborhood - bringing food donations and supplies where needed, blessing houses, and making communion and anointing calls for the elderly.

After lunch, we visited the neighboring city and market in Catacaos, where we happened upon a soccer parade and celebration, a Pentecost procession compete with marching band, and a local dance troupe, all in the same street and roughly the same time.

We closed the day by visiting a girl’s boarding school and orphanage, where we joined the students for a dance party. Please keep us in prayer and know we’re praying for you, too!
