Luke 20:27–44 -- Jesus, just days away from his death, is ratcheting up the focus on the accomplishment of his mission. In these final hours, his words are designed to clearly confront sin and put it in its place, because that is exactly what his death will do. As Christians, our hope of life beyond death and the joyful fulfillment of all of God’s promises is not in an idea or an abstraction, but in a Person — in Jesus Christ Himself.

What does our world need most? Stronger politics, better education, more technology, personal freedom? Everyone has an answer. But in Luke 19 we are confronted with a different answer. Jesus Christ enters Jerusalem and reveals Himself as King. Yet He comes in ways that overturn every expectation. He comes in weakness, He weeps in compassion, and He cleanses in holiness. This is not a King you can put on the shelf. This is the King you cannot ignore.

Godliness and religious piety may seem like a waste of time, returning little gain on our investment. What profit is it to man to spend his entire life on "religion" when there's much to be had and enjoyed elsewhere? But Paul exhorts Timothy to devote himself to godliness because there's great value in it - not just for this life, but for the life to come. Christians likewise must learn to see godliness as a gain, not a drain.

The question for Christians is this: if doubt is a lack of confidence in the things believed, is it then sin to doubt? This is a reasonable question, not only because of the obvious stakes that are involved, but because it's such a common human problem that if it were the case, we would all be found guilty of the sin of doubt.

Sometimes the Christian life can feel a bit like Sisyphus, doomed to roll the stone of sin's weight and burden up the hill, only to have it slip beyond our grasp, rolling back down, and having to start over again. But why does it feel this way, and does have it to? We'll study the origin, nature, and influence of sin, and how we can overcome sin as Christians.
