Thoughts on seeking out mentors and teachers
Someone recently approached me with a question regarding how best to find a teacher that is a good fit; this person had worked with a teacher in the past whose deeper philosophies did not align well with the student’s own self-understanding, and that led to a parting of ways. In particular, the teacher expressed the idea that, to be successful along the path, it was important always to be positive, and to smile all the time, so that one’s workings were positive as well.
Finding a teacher is, ultimately, not much different from finding a life partner, or finding a good counselor or therapist; all three are people who are going to be intimately involved in one or more aspects of your life, and (if the relationship lasts any length of time) can have deep and long-lasting effects on your future.
When looking for someone to date, there are all sorts of approaches people take, from Tinder to Meat-market bars to taking up social hobbies or clubs in the hopes of meeting someone they click with. I personally think that finding activities that you are interested in, and doing those things, and meeting people that way, is a better strategy than things like Tinder, because it means that you have at least something to talk about that you have in common. I feel like finding teachers is also best done in an organic way, by attending events and gatherings that have various people teaching classes or presenting workshops; that way, you can get a feel for their energy and their approach to the path in a low-commitment way, and if you don’t feel a “click” with them, there’s no hard feelings...
