The path to a stable living situation sometimes starts with a search for some of the basic identity tools of modern life. Social security numbers, birth certificates, and other fixtures of a person’s legal identity are key to restoring income, eligibility for employment, housing and banking services.

One of the many things that Micah’s Journey volunteers do is walk side-by-side with our neighbors in the sometimes arduous process of helping them reclaim these keys to moving forward.

These special volunteers are highly trained sleuths with the knowledge and patience necessary to navigate the complex world of bureaucratic records, or sometimes just ask that extra question that provides a clue to finding information key to helping neighbors reclaim their identity.

Journey volunteers make a difference by helping neighbors move forward one more step toward a more stable future.

It's detailed, difficult work. And it changes lives.

We love adding new volunteers into our daily team of life-changers at Micah. If you are interested in learning about how to join our family of volunteers, check out the volunteer page under “Give Help” on our website. There, you can learn more about our volunteer roles, and get signed up for an orientation.

Relationships are at the heart of the work we do every day at Micah.

For our neighbors experiencing homelessness, relationships can provide stability, support, encouragement and connection as they work toward housing and healing.

But relationships are also essential to HOW this work happens.

No one organization can meet every need alone. That’s why we are grateful for strong partnerships throughout our community: relationships built on trust, communication and a shared commitment to caring for our neighbors.

One example is our ongoing collaboration with the and a network of local organizations and service providers. Together, these partners regularly come to the table to share perspectives, strengthen communication and better support members of our community who may need extra care and connection.

In 2025 alone, this collaborative effort tracked 93 individuals with complex needs. Of the 39 neighbors who received coordinated care through the partnership, 18 were housed or had a housing plan in place by the end of the year. Others were connected to hospital care, mental health treatment, recovery support, family reunification or safer living situations.

Groups represented at these meetings include the Rappahannock Area Community Services Board, the Fredericksburg Department of Social Services, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, the Fredericksburg Regional Continuum of Care and the Fredericksburg Public Defender’s Office.

These conversations are not about quick fixes. They are about listening, understanding challenges together, and continuing to build a community where no one is overlooked.

We are thankful to work alongside so many people and organizations who believe every neighbor matters.

What happens when a form asks for your address, and you don’t have one?

For many of our unhoused neighbors, that single blank space can become a major barrier to rebuilding stability.

An address is often required to apply for jobs, receive benefits, access services, replace identification documents or stay connected with family and friends. Without one, important opportunities can slip away.

That’s why one of the many services offered through Micah’s Neighbor Care Center on Princess Anne Street is mail service.

For neighbors experiencing homelessness, Micah can serve as a trusted mailing address and a consistent place to receive important correspondence. It may seem simple, but having a reliable place for mail can open doors to resources and support that help people move forward.

Behind the scenes, Micah volunteers carefully sort and organize mail each day to make sure every piece ends up in the right hands.

Sometimes, rebuilding a life starts with something as basic—and as meaningful—as having a place to receive your mail.

Angelo Logan knows that more and more people in our community are struggling to find stable places to live.

Here, he shares why he felt called—not just as a pastor, but as a community member—to partner with Micah Ecumenical Ministries in being part of the solution.

Real change happens when people step forward together with compassion, courage and a willingness to act.

We are grateful for partners like Angelo who believe every neighbor deserves the opportunity to thrive.

A warm meal can mean so much more than food. ❤️

At Micah’s Respite House, neighbors recovering from medical issues after a hospital stay have a safe place to heal when they do not have a home to return to. Along with rest and medical stability, one of the most meaningful parts of that healing is simple human connection around the dinner table.

We are currently seeking individuals, families, and small groups willing to provide dinner for eight residents on a regular monthly basis.

Some volunteers cook meals on-site and share dinner with our neighbors. Others bring takeout or drop off a prepared meal. However you choose to help, these dinners provide comfort, dignity, and community to people during a vulnerable moment in their lives.

Current openings include:
🗓️ Mondays (except 4th Mondays)
🗓️ 1st or 2nd Tuesdays
🗓️ 3rd Wednesdays
🗓️ 1st or 4th Fridays
🗓️ 1st Saturdays

This is a meaningful opportunity for a family, church group, small group, or circle of friends to make a direct impact.

To learn more or sign up, contact Alacia Harrison at [email protected] or 540-200-8373.

Pastor Angelo Logan shares the moment his perspective changed—when he chose to say “yes” to an individual seeking housing with support from Micah Ecumenical Ministries.

As both a pastor and a landlord, Angelo reflects on trust, partnership and the power of second chances. His story is a reminder that when communities come together, doors can open for individuals working toward stability and a new beginning.

Sometimes, all it takes is someone willing to believe in the possibility of home.

What does chronic homelessness really cost a community?

When people are forced to survive outside without stable housing or support, emergency systems become the default safety net. Hospitals, jails, police, shelters and crisis services all carry enormous costs on both a financial and a human level.

Supportive housing changes that equation.

Research shows that helping people move into stable housing with supportive services is significantly less expensive than allowing chronic homelessness to continue unchecked. It also leads to better health, greater stability and stronger communities.

This is why solutions like Jeremiah Community matter. Housing is not only compassionate — it is a smarter investment in the future of our region.

Are you on the bus? Grab a seat!

Micah has created a Come and See opportunity for various individuals and groups to experience Micah's 20-year journey to Jeremiah Community. It takes about 2.5 hours. We start at the Neighbor Care Center with a bit of story telling and vision setting, then we visit Respite and the Cold Weather

Something as small as a plastic card can make a huge difference in a person’s life.

Without a driver’s license or photo ID, everyday tasks become major obstacles.

Applying for jobs. Accessing services. Filling prescriptions. Opening a bank account. Even proving who you are.

For our unhoused neighbors, replacing a lost or stolen ID can feel almost impossible.

That’s why Micah is grateful to partner with the Virginia DMV to bring DMV Connect mobile services directly to Fredericksburg Baptist Church, next door to our Neighbor Care Center on Princess Anne Street.

Every other month, neighbors can take steps toward replacing IDs, renewing licenses and accessing other DMV services in a quieter, more accessible setting in downtown Fredericksburg.

Micah volunteers Dave and Craig, pictured here, help welcome guests, answer questions and walk alongside neighbors as they navigate forms and paperwork.
Sometimes, rebuilding stability starts with something as simple as having the identification you need to move forward.

DMV Connect visits our neighbors at Micah every other month, thanks to the efforts of our volunteers, who keep this schedule running smoothly.
