St. John’s Cemetery sits on approximately four acres in downtown Frederick and is the final resting place of between 2500 and 3000 early settlers, famous citizens, religious men and women, local families, and soldiers and other veterans from every war dating back to the French & Indian War in 1754.

We know of at least five American veterans of the US Revolutionary War buried here and one English one. George Littlejohn was born in Scotland in 1755 and came to America, not as a tourist or emigrant, but as a British Redcoat Soldier! He was captured by the Americans during the defeat of General Burgoyne at Saratoga in 1777 and imprisoned at the Hessian Barrack here in Frederick. After serving his sentence, he remained here, married Theresa Mitchell in 1779 and raised a family with two sons. He died in 1824. It is interesting to note that one of George’s sons, George Walbert Littlejohn, served in the 3rd Regiment of the Maryland Militia in the War of 1812, fighting the British Redcoats!

Another Revolutionary War veteran is Hugh Sweeney. He was born in 1755 in Baltimore, served in the American Army during the Revolutionary War and later was called up as a member of the militia to suppress the Insurrection of 1794 in Western Pennsylvania, more commonly known as the Whiskey Rebellion. He served under Virginia Governor, Henry ‘Light Horse Harry’ Lee, who was a hero of the Revolutionary War, and father to Robert E. Lee. Hugh rode with President George Washington and 13,000 troops into the area to quell the rebellion.
