“THE FAITHFULNESS OF GOD”
Psalm 89:1-5
Illustration of faithfulness –
In Wyoming, and in the Yellow Stone National Park lies the “Old Faithful” Geyser. Every 65 minutes “Old Faithful” erupts shooting up water 90-180 feet. She expels over 7,000 gallons of water at each eruption. It is said that this geyser is called “Old Faithful” because you can count on her erupting each hour and up to twenty times daily.
“Faithful” is an attribute (or quality) of God’s character (He is also self-existent – Colossians 1:16, He is immutable – James 1:17, He is good – Hebrews 2:17, He is holy and without sin – Leviticus 11:44).
“Faithfulness” is who God is and not so much what He does.
God’s “faithfulness” is expressed to us in ways that we depend upon. The Cross of Jesus is God’s statement of His faithfulness that is the bedrock of His many acts of faithfulness.
DEFINITION OF GOD’S FAITHFULNESS -
This means that God is stable or steadfast (I Thessalonians 5:24). God’s faithfulness:
1. Extends to all His works, even unto the clouds – Psalm 33:4, Psalm 36:5
2. Extends to all generations – Psalm 119:90
3. It is great and they do not fail – Lamentations 3:23.
DIRECTED TO MANKIND –
Consider two men in the Scriptures who testified of God’s faithfulness in difficult situations they experienced. The 3 Hebrew men trusted God’s faithfulness even when they were casted into the fiery burning furnace (Daniel 3:17-18). And the Apostle Paul when facing certain death from Nero testified that his God would keep His Word in taking him to heaven and giving him a crown of righteousness (2 Timothy 4:7-8). To each Christian, our God:
A. He Keeps His Promises – Deuteronomy 7:89, Psalm 89:1-8
B. He Keeps His Children’s souls in their trials – I Peter 4:19
C. He Chastens Us as His children – Psalm 119:75, Hebrews 12:1-8
D. He Answers Prayers – Psalm 143:1
E. He forgives our Sins when I repent and confess it to Him – I John 1:9
CONCLUSION
How can you and I withhold our praise and thanksgiving when God is so faithful to us?
Dear Child of God, in what way(s) has God shown His faithfulness to you today?
