Brian Kevin Calmes (March 28, 1956 - November 27, 2021)
Kevin was born and raised in Franklinton, Louisiana, the son of Mary Ella and N. B. Calmes, Jr. He graduated from Franklinton High School in 1974; from Copiah-Lincoln Community College in Wesson, Mississippi, where he studied music performance and composition; and Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond, Louisiana, where he studied computer science and later served as the university's webmaster.
Growing up, Kevin taught himself guitar, playing in churches and other venues as a teenager. He and a friend formed their own band and recorded several original songs. He developed into a virtuoso guitarist, keyboardist, and an accomplished composer of original music. During his time as webmaster at Southeastern, he developed an enthusiasm for violin, took lessons, and was invited to play in the university orchestra. For 21 years, Kevin was also a ham radio operator, providing radio communications supporting local, state, and federal operation during disasters.
Earlier in 2021, he moved to Nashville, Tennessee, to be near his loving son Nicholas, an active professional musician. Kevin was fully vaccinated but recently contracted Covid-19 and expired late in the afternoon of November 27.
In addition to his son, Kevin is survived by brothers Michael (Boston, Massachusetts), Pat (Franklinton), and Kelly (Campbellsville, Kentucky). It was his wish that his ashes be interred next to his parents in the Fisher United Methodist Church cemetery in Richardson outside Franklinton.
