WORDS OF REASSURANCE: God's light is present in this world. Present in the Christ child, born to lead us out of darkness. Present in the star, in all that guides us to love. God's light is in the world, and the darkness did not overcome it. God's grace is in the world, and our missteps will not overcome it. We are loved, we are forgiven. Alleluia! Amen.

Psalm 80:1-7, 17-19
Romans 1:1-7
Matthew 1:18-25

Candle lighting liturgy:
First Reader: Today, we come face to face with the scandal of Advent: Mary, the unmarried mother; God Incarnate growing in Mary’s womb as a vulnerable baby; Joseph contemplating leaving Mary because of her pregnancy; God’s love at work in ways that society and propriety could not understand; God calling Mary and Joseph to faithfulness despite the fear of disgrace.

All: With Mary and Joseph, we choose to wait, watch, and listen for the way of Love instead of responding in fear to the world’s judgment.

Second Reader: We light this candle of love as a sign of our faithfulness as we seek, find, and follow Emmanuel, God with us.

O Christ, we long for your coming. Hasten that day when those who seek you in every nation will come from the east and the west, from the north and the south, and sit at the table in your kingdom. Hasten the day when your kingdom will come in all its glory, and suffering and pain and sickness and oppression and death will be overcome forever. Hasten the day when we will be resurrected as a great multicultural family and live in peace, harmony, joy, and love together in your kingdom.

O Come O Come Emanuel https://youtu.be/01BcaggibDw?si=wuKe7H7ejp_bsgTK

Advent people, go now in the blessing of God to watch and wait, ready to receive the angels among us and to faithfully follow where God leads. Amen.

Today's scripture readings:
Jeremiah 23:1-6
Psalm 46
Colossians 1:11-20
Luke 23:33-43

Lord, we believe you when you say you will lead us. But we have suffered at the hands of those who would destroy and scatter your sheep. You promised that you would raise up shepherds who will gather us together so that no one will have to live in fear. So,we look for those shepherds, Lord.

We pray for those who will do good and do right, for those who will protect the children, who will school the children, who will give the children hope.

We pray for those shepherds who will pursue peace, who will walk humbly, who will reconcile nations.

We pray for shepherds who will fight injustice, who stand on the side of justice.

We pray for shepherds who will feed the hungry, clothe the naked, and set at liberty the captives.

We pray for shepherds who will spread love, show mercy, and practice hospitality.

Lord, we pray for our shepherds, we pray for our people, we pray for our country, we pray for the nations. Amen.

God is our strength and our salvation.
God’s anger is turned away,
and in its place, we find comfort,
steadfast love, and forgiveness.
With this hope, we can draw water
from the wells of salvation
with joy and thanksgiving.

Psalm 98
The victory of our God

98:1
O sing to the LORD a new song, for he has done marvelous things. His right hand and his holy arm have gotten him victory.

98:2
The LORD has made known his victory; he has revealed his vindication in the sight of the nations.

98:3
He has remembered his steadfast love and faithfulness to the house of Israel. All the ends of the earth have seen the victory of our God.

98:4
Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all the earth; break forth into joyous song and sing praises.

98:5
Sing praises to the LORD with the lyre, with the lyre and the sound of melody.

98:6
With trumpets and the sound of the horn make a joyful noise before the King, the LORD.

98:7
Let the sea roar and all that fills it, the world and those who live in it.

98:8
Let the floods clap their hands; let the hills sing together for joy

98:9 at the presence of the LORD, for he is coming to judge the earth. He will judge the world with righteousness and the peoples with equity.

Sisters and brothers, we are part of the new heaven and new earth. In God’s love, we can reach across the differences that divide us. Greet one another in this spirit of reconciliation and peace.

Our lives are full of mistakes and errors – places where we follow self-generated idols instead of the One True God. We are not alone in these mistakes – all of those who have come before us also experienced temptation and sin. Let us come before God, just as generations of believers have done, and pray for God’s forgiveness and grace.

Hymn: Hymn of Promise https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8RHek8k5WoY

Friends, receive this good news! Jesus taught through his words and deeds that God has already forgiven us. Thus, we and all who have come before us are rightly known as saints – the holy ones of God! Thanks be to God for God’s mercy, grace, and love! Amen!
