We have decided to cancel our worship service for tomorrow based on current snow/ice accumulation, road conditions and the continued forecast for the rest of today and tomorrow.

We love you, and are praying the Lord keeps us all safe and works in us for his glory. We can’t wait to be gathered together again next week, Lord willing.

As we close out our monthly series for 2025 in our Sovereign Grace Catechism, this month gives us the opportunity to look forward, anticipating Jesus’s return. Much like the time before his first advent, we are a people who wait eagerly for our savior.

May this question and answer help us in this season to feel and renew the hope we have. Just as we enter into the joy of “Christ has come”, let’s embrace the longing and hope of “Christ will come again.”

The question asked by our catechism this month is one we are wise to ask regularly; “What is the mission of the church?” Without knowing the reason we exist and the clarity of what God has called us to do, we can easily be busy in the wrong directions.

But, God didn’t leave us to wonder or make up our own mission. Rather, he’s called every church to the same essential purpose. Until Jesus comes back, we are his witnesses who worship Him and build one another up. What a glorious calling!

Reviewing the mission reminds us of the honor of being called His people and reorients our hearts and lives around God’s desire for us in the world. We, as a local expression of God’s people, have the same mission as our brothers and sisters around the world. We are all called to live out Matt. 28 and make disciples through proclamation and teaching.

This month, let’s use our catechism Q&A to meditate often on what God has called us to, that we might faithfully engage in the mission.

We know that being a Christian does not mean we are free from trials, suffering or hardship. In fact, Jesus himself told us the very opposite when he said plainly, “In the world you will have tribulation.” (John 16:33b ESV)

James counsels us to “Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds... (James 1:2 ESV). And Paul reminds the church in Rome that “the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.” (Rom. 8:18 ESV)

This doesn’t minimize our suffering, but rather recognizes that our world is broken and tainted by sin. Against this darkness, the gospel hope we have shines even more brightly.

Jesus has overcome the world. He is preparing a place that we might be with him forever. Our trials lead us to fix our eyes on the future and shape us into mature people who recognize our true home is awaiting us. It is the good news of salvation by grace through faith in Christ’s finished work that gives us this hope.

This month our catechism reading helps us remember that truth. We can rejoice as we trust God and wait for the day when all things have been made new.

Knowing the purpose for something often changes how we view it.

Imagine a young girl who shows a talent for art. Her grandfather comes to her one day with a neatly wrapped gift. To her surprise, when she opens it, is an expensive set of brushes and watercolor paints. As she thanks her grandfather, he tells her, “I want you to paint a field of flowers for your grandma.”

Imagine the way her grandfather’s words transform how she sees the brushes and the paint. She has a purpose for the use of the gift.

One of the reasons God has given his children spiritual gifts, is that we might use them to build one another up. Listen to what Paul writes to the church in Corinth:

“To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.”
(1 Corinthians 12:7 ESV)

As our catechism reading for Sept. reminds us, the gifts we are given by the Holy Spirit are meant for a purpose as well; that His church would be built up and that the world would see and hear the testimony of his people.

May the purpose of the gifts the Spirit gives us help us see how we might use them for his glory and the good of others.
