Throughout the book of Proverbs, Solomon often writes as a Father writing to a son, offering both wisdom and warning. In Chapter 5, Solomon takes this same posture in offering a stern warning against adultery. Speaking man to man, Solomon sets his sights on a battle that is all too common among men -- sexual sin.
While adultery is the focus, Solomon speaks of the "forbidden woman" in this chapter as a personification of sexual temptation and promiscuity in general, warning his son to avoid it at all costs. This warning highlights both the consequences of succumbing to sexual sin and marital unfaithfulness, as well as the great joy and beauty of honoring God's design for sexuality within the context of marriage.
The culmination of his warning, however, is discovered in verse 21 where Solomon reminds us that our ways are always before the eyes of God. In most cases, sexual sin is an unseen battle taking place behind closed doors, unknown to others, but Solomon reminds his son that God sees all things. There is nothing in our life that is hidden from God's sight.
Ironically, Solomon was well acquainted with this particular struggle as he battled it most of his life, and had firsthand knowledge of the carnage it creates in life. Like any good father, he longed for his son not to fall victim to the same traps and encourages him to instead choose to honor God and his spouse by living within God's good design for marriage and sexuality.
