Throughout the book of Proverbs, Solomon often writes as a Father writing to a son, offering both wisdom and warning. In Chapter 5, Solomon takes this same posture in offering a stern warning against adultery. Speaking man to man, Solomon sets his sights on a battle that is all too common among men -- sexual sin.

While adultery is the focus, Solomon speaks of the "forbidden woman" in this chapter as a personification of sexual temptation and promiscuity in general, warning his son to avoid it at all costs. This warning highlights both the consequences of succumbing to sexual sin and marital unfaithfulness, as well as the great joy and beauty of honoring God's design for sexuality within the context of marriage.

The culmination of his warning, however, is discovered in verse 21 where Solomon reminds us that our ways are always before the eyes of God. In most cases, sexual sin is an unseen battle taking place behind closed doors, unknown to others, but Solomon reminds his son that God sees all things. There is nothing in our life that is hidden from God's sight.

Ironically, Solomon was well acquainted with this particular struggle as he battled it most of his life, and had firsthand knowledge of the carnage it creates in life. Like any good father, he longed for his son not to fall victim to the same traps and encourages him to instead choose to honor God and his spouse by living within God's good design for marriage and sexuality.

Men, nothing is hidden from God and it's never too late to restore what is broken in our lives. The decision to honor God and your wife is a daily one. In our flesh, our carnal nature is a power force, but in Christ and alongside other Grace Point Men, we can wage war against the one who is actively working to destroy your heart and your home.

You don't have to battle alone. There are men at Grace Point who stand ready to walk with you through life's most challenging battles.

If we are going to pursue wisdom, it requires that we also pursue righteousness. Living wisely and living rightly are two sides of the same coin. Fortunately for us, God has revealed both in the scriptures.

In Proverbs 4, Solomon compares the path of those who strive to live righteous lives with the rising sun at dawn, growing brighter and brighter until the fullness of day. In our lifetimes, we may never experience the fullness of God's wisdom, presence, or glory, but as we grow in our relationship with him, our experience of each will grow brighter each day. As more is revealed, more is understood and the clearer our path becomes. A path that anticipates a future reality when we will know and experience God fully.

Compare this to the way of the wicked, marked by pitch-black darkness so blinding that a person doesn't even know what it is they're stumbling over. It's a perpetual experience of fumbling around in the dark, looking for answers and searching for meaning to no avail.

Light and darkness. Right and wrong. Good and evil. In a culture marked by moral and ethical relativism, these categories often cause offense. For the man of God, they are realities we choose between each day.

This week, you have an opportunity to carry light into your home, your workplace, and your community. Shining a light on a better path for those who stumble through the darkness. Who do you know that is struggling through a dark season in their life that could use a little light?

Whether we take time to think about it often or not, we are all on a path toward something. Each of our lives has a trajectory. A future reality shaped by the decisions we make today.

According to Solomon, that path can either be straight or it can be crooked. A straight path is one marked by clarity, confidence, and purpose. A life where we know where we are going, how we will get there, and why we make the choices we do along the way. A crooked path on the other hand is defined by confusion, fear, and aimlessness. It’s a life filled with uncertainty, moving targets, and languishing in the face of adversity.

Let’s be honest; we all long for the straight path. God offers us a simple solution. 1) Trust God More, 2) Trust Your Limited Understanding Less, 3) Acknowledge Him in All Things.

Practically, that looks like day-by-day trusting God and his ways made known to us through His word, leaning on God in prayer when our limited perspective prevents us from fully understanding the things happening in our lives and the world around us, and actively acknowledging God’s activity in even the most minutiae details of our daily experience. God has a plan. Your life has a purpose. Jesus has the solution.

Who or what are you trusting in this week? As a follower of Jesus, you have access to the one who has the power to make your path straight.

It's one thing to say we desire wisdom and understanding, but another thing to actively pursue them. Likewise, it is one thing to say we desire a growing relationship with God and another thing to daily pursue Him.

Our relationship with God and our growth in knowledge and wisdom are not passive, but active.

God is the beginning of knowledge and wisdom because God is the source of all knowledge and wisdom. Proverbs 2 encourages us that IF we actively pursue wisdom (v.1-4), THEN God will give it to us (v.5-6) and the result will be a life marked by God's wisdom (v. 7-22). According to Solomon, this type of life is a life of integrity, justice, equity, uprightness, discretion, and ultimately righteousness.

Why? Because the wisdom and understanding born out of a relationship with God transform our lives and inform our lifestyle, so that we live the way God has created and called us to live.

At Grace Point, we call this Lifestyle Integrity and it's one of our core values. When you think about your relationship with God, how active vs. passive would you say you've been in the last week? If real knowledge and understanding come from the mouth of God, how are you positioning yourself in life to hear God speak through his word and prayer?

God desires to give us wisdom and he calls us to pursue it. How are you pursuing Him this week?
