Occasionally, I stroll through Carton's McGavock Cemetery to reflect on the moments of history that site embodies. It was 3 years ago today, Robert Hicks Elle Fleming Justin Stelter & our Carnton Enslaved Monument Unveiling Committee overcame challenges seen & unseen to celebrate the Enslaved Monument's unveiling. Now three years later, Robert Hicks, Brant Bousquet & others are no longer physically here with us. It's sobering to think how fleeting life is — as just seemingly moments (actually years) later — Robert would be buried steps away from the Enslaved Monument he envisioned — and how at Robert's final resting place would be where I would see and talk with our mutual close friend Brant for the very last time. It's moments like today (Enslaved Monument's Anniversary) and each stroll through Carnton's McGavock (including the Confederate Cemetery) that I'm reminded of the costs our ancestors paid for us just to have a chance to do better and make the country we love a more perfect union. A stroll through Carnton always inspires me to do just that. When's the last time you've strolled through Carton?
