Are people just painting over the problem?

St. Paul's ECC invites the community to hear from its newly installed bi-vocational pastor, Rev. Dr. Jason O. Mohn. In this week's sermon, "The Surface and the Soil," Rev. Dr. Mohn draws a powerful connection between his professional painting work and the spiritual life.

He notes that professional painters spend 80% of their time on the "prep". A pro knows that if the surface is not sound, even the most expensive paint is just a colorful skin over a crumbling foundation. Rev. Dr. Mohn challenges the "novice" mentality often applied to spiritual journeys. People frequently spend their energy maintaining a clean, respectable "coat of paint" over lives that feel like they are falling apart underneath. But the Gospel is not simply a fresh coat of paint.

To understand the transformation Jesus offers, Rev. Dr. Mohn encourages a shift away from the synthetic world of painting to the organic world of the garden. He calls this moving from the "Theology of the Decor" to "The Theology of Dirt".

What to expect in "The Surface and the Soil":

Breaking the Ground: Why a hidden story is a useless story, and how God turns hardened ground into an abundant harvest.

Planting in the Decay: An invitation to stop trying to "clean" the dirt and start tending the soil and trusting the Seed.

Sharing the Harvest: How the transformation of the heart drives believers back out into the messy world as messengers of a Resurrection.

Celebrate with Us: Installation Sunday & Brunch!

St. Paul’s ECC is excited to invite everyone to a special morning as we officially welcome Rev. Dr. Jason O. Mohn into his new role as Bivocational Pastor on Sunday, April 12, at 10:00 a.m.

We are also very happy to have Anthony Thomas joining us. Anthony serves as the Director of Clergy & Congregational Care for the Central Conference of the ECC, and we’re grateful to have him share in this day with us.

Stick Around for Brunch!
The best part of any Sunday morning is the food and the company. Right after the service, we’re hosting a community brunch in the fellowship hall. It’s a great chance to hang out, meet Anthony, and catch up with friends and neighbors over a good breakfast lunch.

Holy Saturday: Finding God in the Silence

Today is the quietest day of the church year. It’s the "in-between" time—the space between the pain of the Cross and the joy of the Resurrection.

Most of our lives are lived in the "Saturday." We live in the tension of a world that is still broken, but with a God who has already won.

The Meditation: The God Who Absorbs

When Jesus was laid in the tomb, it seemed like the grave had swallowed the Light. But Jesus wasn’t just in the grave; He was occupying it. He was absorbing the power of death and the weight of our brokenness so they could never hold us again.

"The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning..." — Lamentations 3:21–24

A Breathing Prayer for Your Day
Take a moment to pause, breathe, and reflect:
Breathe In: In the silence of the tomb, we wait.
Breathe Out: Lord, teach us to trust You in the dark.
Breathe In: For the places in our lives that feel "dead and buried."
Breathe Out: Lord, prepare us for the New Creation.

A Closing Prayer
O God of the Silence, thank You for inhabiting the grave. As we wait for the joy of Easter morning, help us rest in the knowledge that our shame is buried and Your love is already stirring in the deep. Amen.
