This next Sunday we'll be in Acts 15:1-21 as we examine the response of the church in Jerusalem to the Gospel work among the Gentiles from Paul and Barnabas' missionary journey detailed in Acts 13 and 14. Consider the following as you read ahead of next Sunday -

1) in Antioch of Syria men came and taught the new disciples they were not truly saved unless they were circumcised as the law of Moses stated - can you think of conditions people may place on others today to question or confirm whether they are "truly" saved?

2) Luke records in 15:3 that people were joyful hearing the news that Gentiles were being saved, but apparently not everyone was joyful. The Pharisees and their followers wanted control over the new Gentile disciples. Why do you suppose it's difficult for people to just be joyful when God is doing a work in people's lives? Why must we place our own conditions or control on their faith?

3) the basis of Peter's argument in 15:6-11 is all persons are saved in the same fashion - by the undeserved grace of the Lord Jesus. How does this truth encourage you today? What about this truth helps you to give witness to the love and mercy of God through His Son?

Hope you have a blessed week!

We will be in Acts 14:21-28 this coming Sunday. I encourage you to read ahead, and consider the following as you study the passage -

1) Verse 21 tells us Paul and Barnabas return to Lystra, Iconium, and Antioch of Pisidia to strengthen the new believers. Each of these locations held previous danger and confrontation against them and the Gospel. What is your response when people are hostile against you and the Gospel? Does it match the boldness of Paul and Barnabas?

2) In verse 27 the church of Antioch of Syria hears testimony that God "opened the door of faith" to the Gentiles. How often are we praying for open doors from God? Are the open doors we pray for generally personal in nature, or more kingdom oriented?

Hope to see you Sunday morning as we talk about the narrow road into the kingdom!

We dive back into the book of Acts this coming Sunday, by looking at Acts 14:8-20. You are encouraged to read ahead this week and consider the following as you digest God's word.

1) In verses 8&9, we're told of a man who is intensely listening to Paul's preaching, and Luke records Paul "realized he had faith to be healed" and calls the man to stand up. The word "realized" {perceiving, seeing, etc. in other translations} can be understood to mean physically seeing with the eyes, spiritually seeing with the mind or to know something by experience. How well do you "see" people around you? Do we invite God into our ordinary lives to help us see extraordinary possibilities?

2) The bulk of this passage has to do with the people of the city thinking Paul and Barnabas are Greek gods in human form, due to the healing of the man. But Paul and Barnabas are just ordinary men. This reminds me of James 5:17,18 who tells us, "Elijah was just as human as we are, and yet when he prayed earnestly that no rain would fall, none fell for 3 and 1/2 years. Then, when he prayed again, the sky sent down rain and the earth began to yield its crops." What goes through your mind when you read such things? Can you imagine praying such BIG prayers? Do you find yourself praying big prayers, but perhaps praying them with a nagging thought that they probably won't come true? Let the Spirit of God minister to you in this discussion and challenge your thoughts of what God can do through you.

This coming Sunday will be Lord's Supper Sunday, and our text will be Matthew 27:32-44. I encourage you to spend some time in this passage over the next few days and consider the following in preparation -

1) a claim is directed at Jesus saying He said He would destroy the temple and rebuild it - read John 2:18-21, and see if you can notice the difference between their claim and what Jesus actually stated.

2) notice how quickly the scene shifts and gathers momentum - first the crowds hurl the insults, then the religious leaders, and finally the criminals on either side join in. This demonstrates how quickly harsh words, insults, and slander can grow in strength - contemplate your words over the past week...have they been words that build up or tear down? What can you do to make right any situations where your words have caused harm?

3) in all of His trial and crucifixion Jesus demonstrated not only great strength but great patience in accepting a great injustice against Him. He was even moved to forgive those who carried out the injustice (Luke 23:34). How do we react to injustice, perceived or real? Take some time this week and pray for Jesus to help you now and in the future when injustice tempts you to respond in ways decidedly unlike Jesus.

Good morning,

With all the rain we've been having I know many of you are in the same boat as me (no pun intended) with yards that are likely overgrown and perhaps other outdoor work that needs attention. I wanted to check and see how many are available to work Saturday morning at the church so we can prioritize tasks based on numbers of people. If you need to work at home that's completely understandable; please let me know by midday Friday if you can assist at church. Have a great Wednesday!

Steve
