Ashes on our forehead? Why would someone want to do that? Throughout history, ashes have been a powerful outward symbol of interior repentance and spiritual awareness. The Early Christians used ashes to show repentance as well, but not just on Ash Wednesday! After going to confession, it was common for the priest to give the person ashes on their forehead. Catholics have been receiving ashes on Ash Wednesday since the time of St. Gregory the Great. In 1091, Pope Urban II encouraged the entire Church to use ashes on Ash Wednesday.
Repentance is an invitation. When John the Baptist first appeared in the desert of Judea, this was his message: “Repent, prepare the way of the Lord” (Matthew 3:2). Later, when Jesus began his ministry, he led with this message: “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand” (Matthew 4:17).
What does it mean for us to repent, here and now, more than two thousand years later? It means the same as it did to the people walking around the dusty pathways in their sandals, trying to inch closer to Jesus as he passed through their town or village. Repent means “to turn back to God.”
We all find ourselves needing to turn back to God many times a day, in ways small and large. It is not a matter of guilt, and it is not a shameful thing. It is simply that we are a better version of ourselves when we return to his side!
May you have a blessed Lent walking with Jesus along the dusty road listening to His Words as you learn to repent!

Our Lady of Lourdes

Who is she and why is she so special to many? It all started in 1858 when a” lady “appeared to Saint Bernadette Soubirous in Lourdes, France. It is now a famous Catholic pilgrimage site known for its miraculous spring and healings. My own grandmother went to Lourdes and the baths they have there with the miraculous waters. People pray to Mary as the patroness of the sick, often asking for her intercession for spiritual and physical well-being through prayers and visits to grottos and shrines worldwide.

Who is Bernadette Soubirous and what does she have to do with all of this? She was a peasant girl who saw a “Beautiful Lady” in a grotto. The “Lady” told Bernadette she was the “Immaculate Conception”. Of course, she did not have a clue what that meant! One of the times Mary appeared to Bernadette, she told her to dig in the ground where a spring of water emerged and is believed to have miraculous healing properties,

Thousands have claimed cures from the spring’s waters and millions of people make pilgrimages to pray to Mary for cures.

The bottom line is that Our Lady of Lourdes is a powerful symbol of Mary's maternal care, a source of hope for the sick, and a reminder of divine grace through the miraculous events in Lourdes, France.
