The Lighthouse - First Spark UMY

The Lighthouse - First Spark UMY The Lighthouse is a historic building that is the home for the combined youth of First United Methodist Church and St. Paul Methodist Church of Frankfort.

In 1856, the land previously used as a livery was purchased from Mansion House. A parsonage was built in 1890. The building was used for state offices at some point, and renovated for church offices in 1972. The building finally became the youth building in 1988, and is still used for this purpose to this day.

Imagine the confusion of the followers of Jesus on the day between His crucifixion and the resurrection. How might they have felt? Then, imagine the surprise and celebration of learning He rose from the dead the following day.

That is the goal of the Day Between Service, a long-standing tradition of the youth of First United Methodist Church in Frankfort, Kentucky. For many years, it has been presented as a unique evening worship service, presented entirely by the youth (grades 6-12). It was sadly cancelled in 2020 due to the COVID epidemic, but the elements were filmed for the first time ever in 2021, and are being presented here on social media to bring this message to others.

We all feel despair, sadness, and loss of hope. During the worldwide COVID pandemic, those feelings have escalated among our youth, our church families, and indeed the whole world. But we know there is a happy ending to the story. A happy ending that the followers of Jesus did not know at the time. Their story is human and relatable. Listen, pray, and allow yourself to feel their pain. And then, rejoice on Easter with the rising of our King.

First Spark is the youth group for First United Methodist Methodist churches in Frankfort, KY. The youth and this service were led by co-leaders, Greg and Melissa Hardison.

Some of our high school boys invited me to join them for a weekend camping trip in the Red River Gorge. (My favorite place!)

We discovered this small angel statue hidden under a cliff at the very top of a very hard to climb mountain.

I’ve been thinking about the message behind this discovery all day.

Yesterday we spotted a hidden, and rarely explored arch at the Gorge, and today we blazed our own trail to the top. We had to work together, and trust each other to stay safe as we climbed up and over some challenging cliffs and boulders. When we finally reached the top, we stopped for a moment to enjoy the view. And that is when discovered this small statue hidden under a ledge.

God is always there with us. Even though he might be hard to see sometimes. But, if we love one another and trust each other along our lives journey, God reveals himself. Sometimes He can be seen inthe beauty of nature, or in the smile and laughter of friends.

Get out, explore, love one another, trust, and search for God in all you do. ❤️ 🙏
