Happy Green Tip Tuesday! In this space, we’ve talked about buying local produce, but what about meat? Here are a few ideas.
* Kentucky Cattlemen's Ground Beef (kentuckycattlemensbeef.com) is produced by Kentucky farmers. You can find it at more than 250 Kroger supermarkets across Kentucky, southern Indiana, Ohio, and Tennessee.
* The Franklin County Farmers Market (franklincountyfarmersmarket.org) offers beef from Mefford Family Farms, chicken from Bramble and Birds, and other products. Order online or shop in person on Tuesdays and Saturdays.
* Oxbow Meats in Lawrenceburg (oxbowmeats.com) offers local beef, pork, and chicken processed onsite. Shop online or at the store in front of the processing plant off U.S. 127 just south of the Bluegrass Parkway.
* Elmwood Stock Farm in Georgetown (elmwoodstockfarm.com) produces organic grass-fed beef and lamb, pasture-raised chicken and pork, and heritage-breed turkey. You can buy Elmwood products at the on-farm store, online, or at farmers markets in Georgetown, Lexington, and Cincinnati.
* Do you have freezer space? Try buying from a local farmer.
At a time when the American meat market is being flooded with products of questionable origin and quality, you have choices! With just a little time and effort, you can buy local meats that you can enjoy and serve to your family with confidence. And when you buy local, you help your farm friends and neighbors.
This is just a partial list. Where do you go for local meats?
