Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Together with my brother bishops, I call on the leaders of the United States and Iran to negotiate a peace deal to end the conflict in the Middle East and prevent more loss of life. As we celebrate the Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ in this Easter season, “let us allow ourselves to be transformed by the peace of Christ,” as Pope Leo reminds us. I join Archbishop Paul Coakley, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, in inviting the faithful of the Archdiocese of Louisville to unite with Pope Leo XIV on Saturday, April 11, in special prayers on this day for peace. I invite you to spend time, individually or collectively, before the Blessed Sacrament before or after Mass. In addition, I encourage you also to pray in your homes and among your families and friends for peace in our world, for our military, and for the victims of this conflict.

- Archbishop Shelton J. Fabre of Louisville

Archbishop Coakley Calls for Holy Hour as a Moment of Renewal for Our Hearts and Our Nation

“Your faith matters. Your prayers matter. Your acts of love and works of justice matter,” said Archbishop Paul S. Coakley, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. “The current climate of fear and polarization, which thrives when human dignity is disregarded, does not meet the standard set by Christ in the Gospel,” he continued, and as a step toward healing, invited bishops and priests across the United States to offer a Holy Hour for Peace.

Archbishop Broglio Urges Funding of Lifesaving Programs and an End to Federal Government Shutdown

“As this government shutdown continues, the U.S. bishops are deeply alarmed that essential programs that support the common good, such as SNAP, may be interrupted.”

With the government shutdown halting SNAP benefits on November 1, more than 600,000 Kentuckians—including children, seniors, and working families—are facing food insecurity. Food pantries across the state are preparing for an overwhelming need. In the spirit of Pope Leo’s exhortation Dilexi Te, we are called to “hear the cry of the poor” and respond with compassion. Please consider giving non-perishable food or a monetary donation to support those in need. Every act of love and generosity helps ensure no family goes hungry.

As the U.S. Congress considers the draft text of the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” in the budget reconciliation process, Archbishop Timothy P. Broglio, president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), encouraged lawmakers to uphold human life and dignity and the common good.

“My brother bishops have sent a comprehensive letter to Congress commending parts of the budget proposal that will support human life and dignity, while also strongly encouraging them to reconsider provisions that will harm the poor and disadvantaged, our immigrant brothers and sisters, and our environment. To our elected lawmakers, I echo the call of my brother bishops and urge you to remain consistent in protecting human life and dignity and supporting the common good so that families can flourish. I also underscore the grave concerns expressed by my brother bishops and implore you to address the real and substantial harms that would result from provisions in this bill before it advances further. Raising income taxes on the working poor, cutting nutrition and healthcare programs for those most in need, and eliminating investments in environmental stewardship would place a terrible burden on the least of our brothers and sisters,” said Archbishop Broglio.

Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Christ is Risen Indeed! We are delighted today by the quick election of Pope Leo XIV, an Augustinian Friar from Chicago who worked for years in Peru and was called by Pope Francis to lead the Dicastery of Bishops in the Roman Curia.

To see the first pope from the United States is a shock to me and to many! But I am thankful to God. He is a missionary, a scholar, an expert in canon law, and a true pastor. Congratulations to Fr. Bob Dueweke, his brother and ours!

Let us all pray for him as he faces the tremendous challenge of feeding and tending the flock of the Lord. May the Gospel always be his guide and may he bring the presence of God to all people.

Peace and all good!

+ John Stowe, OFM Conv.
