"Grow what you eat. Eat what you grow." This is the slogan of the ministry of agriculture in Liberia. Three consecutive weeks of farming God's way outreach training made for a whirlwind tour. Many Liberians have experienced frustration in their agricultural endeavors in failed attempts at making a profit. Although improved agricultural practices can be a great benefit, the broken market chains remain a huge challenge.

Many of the participants have found the encouragement to focus first on growing what you eat to be a breath of fresh air and have helped revitalize their desire to engage in agriculture. We gave them the opportunity to focus on the knowledge and skills necessary to grow an abundant harvest without the added challenge of marketing.

The first workshop in Diaplay was a group of predominantly cocoa farmers that sells their cocoa and then buys food with Liberian dollars that are often depreciated. They were eager to hear biblical keys and foundational Bible stories to learn of God's plan to provide for our most basic physical needs.

The second workshop primarily targeted training trainers that are currently field technicians managing farms that again are focused on profitability. They found the management keys to be particularly useful as they often struggle with managing workers, resources, and time.

The final workshop was a women's agricultural co-op and the timing of this was perfect as they were all getting ready to plant their backyard gardens for the onset of rainy season. Pastor Bill Sebald was joined by Joshua Zemah, Michael Dahn, and Albert Woyah for some parts of these three trainings. We are eager to see what God grows as a result of this vital ministry.

It has been a good day.

"Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive. But each in turn: Christ, the first fruits; then, when he comes, those who belong to him. Then the end will come, when he hands over the kingdom to God the Father after he has destroyed all dominion, authority and power. For he must reign until he has put all enemies under his feet. The last enemy to be destroyed is death." 1 Corinthians 15:20-26

Firstfruits: the first ripe ear of sweet corn was harvested today from our vegetable garden. We also are enjoying zucchini, yellow squash, cucumbers and tomatoes. Seed that was planted, died, and now in bearing fruit. We are planting the seed of God's Word at so many opportunities in Liberia. Pastor Bill was the guest speaker for 3 days at the CRCA (Christian Revival Church Association) Easter conference. This morning, we celebrated the resurrection of Jesus at the ARC with visitors both old acquaintances and new, including a traveler from Austria.
May God daily remind us that our labor in the Lord is not in vain.

Wild horses couldn't 'keep us away . . . from our outreach ministry in Liberia! Two outreach trips in March with Ruth Schwartz leading a reading glass clinic and pastor Bill Sebald telling Bible stories and giving an introduction to farming God's way.. Our encounter with horses in Larpea was a first!

We started on March 7th in Loguatuo while Sarah and David Sebald came back to Liberia for a visit together with Landon, Sarah's friend. They joined the outreach effort. Then on March 21 we repeated the effort in Larpea, joined by Yeak Monneh, a Liberian nurse from St Paul, MN, and director of ULICAF, the support arm of Liberia International Christian College.

In both places 100+ were served with the Word of God, farming God's way intro, and reading glasses. Every outreach is unique with opportunities and obstacles. Pray that the seed that is sown will bring a fruitful harvest.

Hail! As we near the end of dry season in Liberia, March can bring rain once or twice a week. This afternoon, a front rolled in and the first minute of rain included coarse salt sized hail. Yes, quite small, but hail, none the less. We recognized it first by the sound when it hit the zinc (metal roof.) We all rushed out the garage to look and could just barely see small hail crystals bouncing off the concrete. Maybe tomorrow we will see snowflakes! With 92% humidity, it shouldn't be that difficult. We just need one good blast of cold air.
