The life of the patriarchs - Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob - were full of struggles, doubts, and even sin against God and neighbor. But they were also faithful, they continued to trust God and although they never received an earthly land of their own, theirs was the heavenly land that they longed for, just as we do. So as we, in this life, make our way to the heavenly land, we know that Christ is ever-faithful, and that He will bring us to our true home.

In the novel, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, we see a story in that the doctor wants to separate his darker impulses by a chemical formula. The Christian, in many ways, is similar, in that we have two natures at war within us. But we know that, through Christ, the new nature triumphs.

The other readings for this Sunday all have the theme of prayer. This one from Genesis is no exception; a well-known passage where Abraham is before God and dares to "bargain" with God over S***m and Gomorrah. We know their wickedness, and we know that we are no different than they. Yet we also know that God hears our prayers and is merciful to us.

Today's sermon looks at the opening to St. Paul's letter to the Colossians, one of the congregations he established on his missionary journeys. He speaks to his brothers and sisters in Christ in loving terms, and mentions that they have been transferred from the domain of darkness to the Kingdom of the Son. As such, the Christian has a transferred loyalty - from evil to good, on account of what Christ has done for us.

Christ's parable of the Good Samaritan is one that is well known. It is a valuable lesson in who is one's neighbor and how we are to treat one another. More importantly, it is a parable that confesses the very heart of God, in that we can see how Jesus has been our Good Samaritan.

Ezekiel had to go to a people whom God says, "will not listen to you." Yet we find that we live in similar times as the prophet Ezekiel, and the call remains the same for us as we speak to our friends and loved ones who don't know Christ - This is what the Lord says, and we are called to remain firm in that, not waffling, but ready to proclaim the whole counsel of God, both Law and Gospel.

Our sermon text for today comes at a turning point in the Gospel of Luke. Christ now sets His face toward Jerusalem and heads there to fulfill His mission. Along the way, people come and ask to follow after Him, but His answer to them isn't what you'd expect. He even says that anyone who looks back is not fit for the Kingdom of God. So how is one fit for God's Kingdom? Christ reveals the answer to us.

As we transition to the season after Pentecost, we notice that we're going to see more readings focusing on Christ's miracles. Today's reading is no exception, where Jesus casts out a demon from a man who is possessed. We live in a time where, while the spiritual is really expounded, it doesn't even bother to think that there is anything negative spiritually. But the demonic is real and we see just how powerful Christ is against them, and how it helps us to this day.

As we transition to the season after Pentecost, we notice that we're going to see more readings focusing on Christ's miracles. Today's reading is no excepti...

Today, the church commemorates one of the great mysteries of faith - the doctrine of the Trinity. In our text, we see and hear words that always end the Divine Service - the Aaronic Benediction. How does this blessing tell us about the Trinity? We shall have our answers in this sermon.

Today is the day of Pentecost, the fulfillment of the promise of Christ to His disciples on the day of His Ascension and also what He promised on Maundy Thursday. Yet our Old Testament reading seems to have nothing to do with Pentecost. But as we'll see, it does have a connection to what happened in Acts 2:1-21.
