THROWBACK THURSDAY- Let There Be Light!

Genesis 1:3 states, “And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. And God saw that it was good!” While God did not specifically say “Let there be light” to our ancestors, He undoubtedly was with them as they created illuminating upgrades to our churches. Candles brightened the 1846 church. In 1852, candles lit up the new 24-foot-tall frame church with a stove and chimney added in 1853. But by 1879, more bright upgrades were needed. Seen is a Kerosene lamp chandelier used within the 1880 church prior to 1914. The lamps were said to be donated by the women of the congregation. A levy system was used to lower and raise the lights each Sunday. But by 1914, electric lighting was installed, also donated by the congregational women. By 1965, refurbished lighting was added again. The light…it was good!

THROWBACK THURSDAY- The 1956-57 Staff. Trecenti!

The number is 295. What does this number represent? 295 represents the number of years these thirteen servants of Christ served at St. Lorenz. 295 years! On average, this would net about 23 years of service for them all. While some served elsewhere before or after, the majority spent their careers here. Seen are (standing): Walter Bleke (23 years at SLS), Louis Armbrecht (21 years), Ethan Brauer (4), Alvin Richert (15), Martin Gehrs (33), Theodore Scheiwe (31), Ed Roth (36), Herman Sonntag (38), E.F. Rittmueller (47), and Rudolph Schmidt (14). Seated are: Esther Schmidt (20), Phyllis Avery (6) and Sharon Bickel (7). While 295 years would suggest older age, a mix of youth and experience is seen. The staff of the 1956-1967 school year! Nearly a trecenti…a group of 300!
