SOWER SOWER is a United Methodist Church Volunteers in Mission project operating in Frakes, KY In 2015, the approximate cost of construction materials was $45,000.

SOWER -- an acronym for Sharing Our Witness, Enriching Relationships -- is a West Ohio Conference VIM project that operates in conjunction with Henderson Settlement in Frakes, KY. It is an extension of Henderson Settlement’s Work Camp Program, which is designed to enhance the lives of the people of southeastern Kentucky by improving their housing. The counties served by the Settlement are among th

e most impoverished in the nation, with nearly a third of all families living below the poverty line, double the average for the state of the Kentucky. Henderson Settlement’s mission is “Meeting Basic Needs in Appalachia," which it does in a variety of ways by partnering with individuals and churches across the country to display the love of Christ in service and touch the lives of the families who are served. West Ohio Conference churches are responsible for raising all of the money.

The 2023 Henderson Settlement Home Build is underway! The location of this year's build is on Highway 190 about two miles east of the Settlement's main campus. The recipient is Dora Miracle, a 74-year-old widow who will live in the home with her son, Marty, 53. Both have lived in the Frakes area their whole life.
The first volunteers for Week 1 arrived Thursday, May 4, to begin preparing the foundation for framing with the rest of the team beginning Monday. Because the build site is so close to the Settlement, they were able to use the HS tractor to move and spread gravel inside and around the foundation. Normally, that's done with muscle, wheelbarrows, shovels and rakes. The workers thanked God for the tractor!

The Henderson Settlement Home Build/SOWER VIM project began construction on another house in May for a deserving recipient, Carla Shelton. She lost her previous home and all her belongings to a house fire and has been living in a camping trailer since 2020.
The photos in this post are from weeks 1 and 2, when the home was framed outside and inside, sided and roofed. Hopefully we'll add more photos from the weeks 3-6 crews in July and August.
As always, thank you to all who served, gave or prayed - or all three - for this worthwhile ministry. May God bless you!

We're back!
The first two weeks of the 2021 SOWER build are complete and we're right on schedule, with the house roofed and sided and waiting for the electricians and plumbers to come in and do their thing before we resume work in July.
Photos of Weeks 1 and 2 can be viewed at https://photos.app.goo.gl/U1VZyNZrfLc11Jwu7. They include a few of the home recipient, Deborah Lawson, and her 2-year-old grandson, Dawson. They currently live next door to the build site and came over every day to chat with the crews. Deborah is overjoyed to have the build underway because it was delayed a year by the pandemic. Also among the photos is one of her house that was destroyed by fire on Christmas Day 2019.
Thanks to all who worked the first two weeks, those who have volunteered for one or more of the last four, and for those who donated toward materials or prayed for our safety and success.

Because of the recent spike in Covid-19 cases in Ohio, SOWER leadership decided on July 17 to cancel the 2020 house build. It was the most prudent course of action to protect the volunteers and members of the Frakes, KY, community from the virus.
The build will be rescheduled for 2021, hopefully during the normal dates of May, July and August. The recipient of the home does have a place to live in the meantime.
Please pray in the coming months that more people wear masks to help reduce the spread of the virus, as well as for the development of a vaccine that ultimately will eradicate it. And thank you to all who support this ministry with their prayers, gifts and service. 🙏

The 2020 build has been delayed because of the coronavirus pandemic. The revised plan - for now - is to begin construction in August and finish in October. Please pray for that to happen. 🙏

The crews on weeks 5 and 6 did a great job of installing the flooring, painting the trim and doors, and installing the doors and trim and the kitchen. All of it was done in time to have the Tom's house blessed at 10 a.m. on Friday, Aug. house blessing at 10:00 AM on Friday, Aug. 23.
Pastor Steve Judson from Central Trinity UMC in Zanesville did a wonderful job with the blessing – it was a very moving experience for Tom and his family members, as well as the Henderson Settlement staff and the week 6 crew. As part of the blessing, Tom’s uncle requested that we all sing, "Amazing Grace," which he accompanied on the guitar.
The news got even better after that. We recently learned that Tom moved in the house and secured a new job! Jim Knight is working on getting Tom a refrigerator and perhaps a stove with money that was donated for appliances. In the meantime, he is using a “dorm” refrigerator and a microwave from his travel trailer.
Thanks to everyone who served this year for your hard work that made possible this wonderful outcome for Tom. 😇
