Memorial of the Most Holy Name of Mary
At Jesus’ conception Mary’s good name (and her life) would be in jeopardy should it become known that she was pregnant while unmarried. Yet her name falls upon us today not as disgrace, but as all grace. Just speaking her name—often in the prayer “Hail Mary”—brings comfort to many who are troubled. Another traditional prayer, the Memorare, says, “never was it known that anyone who fled to your protection, implored your help, or sought your intercession was left unaided.” Call upon Mary. She has been there, and she hears you.

Today is the Memorial of Saint Peter Claver, a Jesuit priest who left his home in Spain for Cartagena, a port city and chief center for the 17th century slave trade. When men, women, and children were herded out of a slave ship like chained animals and shut up in nearby yards, Claver moved in among them with food and medicine, telling those who assisted him, “We must speak to them with our hands before we try to speak with our lips.” Slavery may be a horror of the past in many parts of the world, but human trafficking still exists in places today. Saint Peter Claver shows us that the kingdom of God cannot come in its fullness until we act.

Today we honor Christ by celebrating the Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is one of the oldest Marian feasts on the liturgical calendar. Connecting Mary’s birth with Jesus’ saving work, Saint Augustine wrote, “She is the flower of the field from whom bloomed the precious lily of the valley.” The child she would bear would be a sign of hope in a broken and weary world. As we honor Mary, consider how you might be a source of hope to others on this day.

How we labor every day matters, and how we are treated and treat others in our work is an essential concern of Christians. We remember Saint Paul’s advice as we labor each day: “Whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God.”

Through the life-giving waters of Holy Baptism, Miles is free from Original Sin; he is made a temple of the Holy Spirit and an heir of heaven. Here he is with his parents John and Meredith, his siblings, grandparents, uncle, Font-Father Zelonis, and Deacon John.

Today is the Memorial of Saint Gregory the Great, Pope and Doctor of the Church. As the son of a wealthy Roman senator, he was well-educated like most of the nobility of his time. But unlike many, he was generous and concerned about the poor. He converted the family estate into the Abbey of Saint Andrew, became a monk there, and founded six Benedictine monasteries on his estates in Sicily. In 590 Gregory was acclaimed pope by the clergy and the people of Rome. He proved to be a true shepherd by faithfully carrying out his office, helping the poor, and spreading and strengthening the faith.
