Society of Race, Ethnicity and Religion

Society of Race, Ethnicity and Religion We must ask if we inadvertently constructed impressive exclusive cul-de-sacs from which to master our particular disciplines.

The mission of the Society of Race, Ethnicity & Religion is to create a space where communities of color and scholars of critical race theory and ethnic studies in religion can gather to discuss among themselves to advance their scholarship. Although a space has been carved out for scholars of color, the scholarship taking place within that space continues to be ignored; and because there are nume

rous sessions and groups during Academic conferences โ€“ so many of our sessions are forced to conflict with each other, seldom providing the opportunity for scholars of color to cross-pollinate. Like a four-leaf clover, our separate cul-de-sacs operate side-by-side with few of us ever venturing into the adjoining communities. Solidarity may occur from time to time, but it usually happens with little intellectual engagement. If we rile against most Euroamericans for not engaging our scholarship, then in all honesty, we must also hold ourselves accountable, for few of us, in our numerous books and articles, actually quote or dialogue with other communities of color.

*New Post Alert!*

Good folx! I'm Laura Mariko Cheifetz (pronouns she/her/hers), a biracial Asian American of Japanese American and Ashkenazi Jewish descent perpetually interested in race, racial formation, and US-based white supremacy ideology, and a member of the administration over at Vanderbilt Divinity School. Most importantly, I'm your new social media manager and newly serving on the board of SRER. Welcome to the first of the SRER monthly *celebration* posts!

We want to hear what good thing you are doing! Do you have a new publication out? Did you give a lecture somewhere? Maybe you have expanded your research in new directions or one of your mentees recently had a big success! Did you recently lead a religious service?

Tell us! Drop a line, drop a link, share your good news! This is not to minimize the suffering in our world, but one of our many small resistances. One of my organizer friends shared this quote from Mariame Kaba: "Hope is a discipline."
