Life can pull our focus in a hundred different directions, but Colossians 3:2 is a great reminder to look higher. When our minds are set on God, we're reminded of what really matters.

🎨 Charity Relieving Distress by Thomas Gainsborough (1727–1788)
🖼️ Indianapolis Museum of Art, Indianapolis, IN

In this moving work, Gainsborough portrays charity in action: a woman reaching beyond herself to care for a family in need. It echoes the words of James 2, reminding us that faith without action is empty:

“If one of you says, ‘Go in peace, keep warm and eat your fill,’ but does not supply their bodily needs, what is the good of that? So faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead.”

James, brother of Jesus and a pillar of the early church, called followers of Christ to a faith expressed through love, mercy, and care. Gainsborough’s brush captures that same truth visually—a call to embody charity as the heart of our faith.

Paul reminds us that love is the foundation of the Christian life. As humans, we often fail to understand what real love is, so this passage is a great reminder of how we can love others the way God loves us. He explains to us a love that puts others first and reflects Christ’s heart. (1 Corinthians 13:4–5)

🎨 Rahab and the Spies (1881) by Frederick Richard Pickersgill

In the book of Joshua, Rahab—a Canaanite woman living in Jericho—risked everything to protect two Israelite spies. Acting in faith, she hid them from the king’s men, secured their safety, and in turn, saved her family when the city fell.

Rahab’s courage and trust in God wove her into the very lineage of Jesus, honored in the New Testament as a model of faith demonstrated through action. Her story reminds us that God works through unexpected people and bold obedience to fulfill His purposes.

As we reflect, may we have the courage to step into God’s plan and the compassion to care for our neighbor as Rahab did.

Faith isn’t about having all the answers, it’s about trusting the One who does. 🙏

Looking to this week's Art Moment with Pastor Marie:
🎨 The Widow (1899) by Ralph Hedley

In this tender scene, a grieving widow sits in quiet reflection, surrounded by the stillness of an empty church. A soft light breaks through the shadows, yet cannot fully reach the depths of her sorrow.

Scripture reminds us again and again of God’s heart for widows and orphans—calling us to be His hands and feet, to offer love, mercy, and care to the vulnerable.

As we reflect on this painting, may we be moved to notice those who are grieving or alone and to extend compassion in action, not just in words.

“Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to care for orphans and widows in their distress.” – James 1:27

🎨 Parable of the Rich Man (1627) by Rembrandt
🖼️ Gemäldegalerie, Berlin

Luke 12:13-21 shares the story of the Rich Fool, a man who stores up earthly treasures for himself yet forgets God and his neighbor. Jesus warns that life does not consist in an abundance of possessions but in being rich toward God.

Rembrandt’s painting captures the solitude and inward focus of the rich man—his world reduced to his own wealth. He does not see God, nor does he see the people beyond his walls who could be blessed by his abundance.

As we reflect on this parable, may we be reminded to look outward, to share generously, and to notice God in the small daily blessings that surround us.

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” – Psalm 34:18
God doesn’t wait for us to have it all together. He meets us right where we are.
Even in the mess, the doubt, or the hurt, His presence is near and His love doesn’t change.

🖼️ The Good Shepherd Episcopal Church, Athens, OH

“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.”
— John 10:11

In this modern icon, artist Kelly Latimore offers a timeless image of Christ’s care, protection, and sacrifice. It echoes the words of Psalm 23, where we find comfort in the presence of the Shepherd who restores our souls and walks with us—even through the darkest valleys.

This Sunday, pause and reflect on the Shepherd who knows you by name, and who never leaves your side.
