But if a man be just,
and do that which is lawful and right,
And hath not eaten upon the mountains,
neither hath lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel,
neither hath defiled his neighbour's wife,
neither hath come near to a menstruous woman,
And hath not oppressed any,
but hath restored to the debtor his pledge,
hath spoiled none by violence,
hath given his bread to the hungry,
and hath covered the naked with a garment;
He that hath not given forth upon usury,
neither hath taken any increase,
that hath withdrawn his hand from iniquity,
hath executed true judgment between man and man,
Hath walked in my statutes,
and hath kept my judgments, to deal truly;
he is just, he shall surely live,
saith the Lord God.
~Ezekiel 18:5-9

Just before this passage, God spoke to Ezekiel and said, "The soul who sins shall die" (v. 4b, NKJV). He then outlined various sins and righteous living in opposition to those sins. The people of Israel apparently had a habit of blaming their fathers for their sins. We see this in the proverb from the beginning of the chapter about sour grapes. God let His people know that if you walk in His statutes, and keep His judgments faithfully, you are just, and shall live, and not die because of your father's sin. That was good news, and an incentive to lead a life of righteousness. Today, even though we have the righteousness of Christ, we should still pursue righteous living as a way of honoring God.

And Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lapidoth, she judged Israel at that time. And she dwelt under the palm tree of Deborah between Ramah and Bethel in mount Ephraim: and the children of Israel came up to her for judgment. And she sent and called Barak the son of Abinoam out of Kedeshnaphtali, and said unto him, Hath not the Lord God of Israel commanded, saying, Go and draw toward mount Tabor, and take with thee ten thousand men of the children of Naphtali and of the children of Zebulun? And I will draw unto thee to the river Kishon Sisera, the captain of Jabin's army, with his chariots and his multitude; and I will deliver him into thine hand.

And Barak said unto her, If thou wilt go with me, then I will go: but if thou wilt not go with me, then I will not go.

And she said, I will surely go with thee: notwithstanding the journey that thou takest shall not be for thine honour; for the Lord shall sell Sisera into the hand of a woman. And Deborah arose, and went with Barak to Kedesh. And Barak called Zebulun and Naphtali to Kedesh; and he went up with ten thousand men at his feet: and Deborah went up with him.

Now Heber the Kenite, which was of the children of Hobab the father in law of Moses, had severed himself from the Kenites, and pitched his tent unto the plain of Zaanaim, which is by Kedesh.

And they shewed Sisera that Barak the son of Abinoam was gone up to mount Tabor. And Sisera gathered together all his chariots, even nine hundred chariots of iron, and all the people that were with him, from Harosheth of the Gentiles unto the river of Kishon.

And Deborah said unto Barak, Up; for this is the day in which the Lord hath delivered Sisera into thine hand: is not the Lord gone out before thee? So Barak went down from mount Tabor, and ten thousand men after him. And the Lord discomfited Sisera, and all his chariots, and all his host, with the edge of the sword before Barak; so that Sisera lighted down off his chariot, and fled away on his feet.

But Barak pursued after the chariots, and after the host, unto Harosheth of the Gentiles: and all the host of Sisera fell upon the edge of the sword; and there was not a man left. Howbeit Sisera fled away on his feet to the tent of Jael the wife of Heber the Kenite: for there was peace between Jabin the king of Hazor and the house of Heber the Kenite.

And Jael went out to meet Sisera, and said unto him, Turn in, my lord, turn in to me; fear not. And when he had turned in unto her into the tent, she covered him with a mantle.

And he said unto her, Give me, I pray thee, a little water to drink; for I am thirsty. And she opened a bottle of milk, and gave him drink, and covered him.

Again he said unto her, Stand in the door of the tent, and it shall be, when any man doth come and enquire of thee, and say, Is there any man here? that thou shalt say, No.

Then Jael Heber's wife took a nail of the tent, and took an hammer in her hand, and went softly unto him, and smote the nail into his temples, and fastened it into the ground: for he was fast asleep and weary. So he died.

And, behold, as Barak pursued Sisera, Jael came out to meet him, and said unto him, Come, and I will shew thee the man whom thou seekest. And when he came into her tent, behold, Sisera lay dead, and the nail was in his temples.
~Judges 4:4-22

God uses available individuals. Deborah was the first woman in the Bible recorded in combat. She was available to be used by God in powerful ways. Because Deborah, who was both a prophetess and a judge for Israel, was taking orders from the Great Commander-in-Chief, she was not afraid to go to battle to defeat the enemy who had oppressed Israel for 20 years. She inspired Barak to go to battle by agreeing to go with him, as he requested. She was bold and listened to God. Even though she set the stage for victory, Barak lacked confidence. Who have you inspired to do God's will? Are you available to be used by Him?

Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to God; He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself. After that he poureth water into a bason, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded.

Then cometh he to Simon Peter: and Peter saith unto him, Lord, dost thou wash my feet?

Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter.

Peter saith unto him, Thou shalt never wash my feet.

Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me.

Simon Peter saith unto him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head.

Jesus saith to him, He that is washed needeth not save to wash his feet, but is clean every whit: and ye are clean, but not all. For he knew who should betray him; therefore said he, Ye are not all clean.

So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments, and was set down again, he said unto them, Know ye what I have done to you? Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another's feet. For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you. Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him. If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.
~John 13:3-17

This week, we looked at a Leader who sets an example, a leader who cares, a leader who builds other leaders, and a leader who intercedes. Today, we will look at Jesus, the Pattern for Leaders. Jesus is our example-setter. At the Last Supper, He exemplified humility and set the pattern for us to follow. The act of foot washing was not the message. Humility was the lesson Jesus wanted to teach His disciples and us. Do you experience joy when serving others? We are all leaders called to lead others to Christ. Embrace Jesus' leadership pattern to be a successful leader.

And it came to pass in the month Nisan, in the twentieth year of Artaxerxes the king, that wine was before him: and I took up the wine, and gave it unto the king. Now I had not been beforetime sad in his presence. Wherefore the king said unto me, Why is thy countenance sad, seeing thou art not sick? this is nothing else but sorrow of heart.

Then I was very sore afraid, and said unto the king, Let the king live for ever: why should not my countenance be sad, when the city, the place of my fathers' sepulchres, lieth waste, and the gates thereof are consumed with fire?

Then the king said unto me, For what dost thou make request?

So I prayed to the God of heaven. And I said unto the king, If it please the king, and if thy servant have found favour in thy sight, that thou wouldest send me unto Judah, unto the city of my fathers' sepulchres, that I may build it.

And the king said unto me, (the queen also sitting by him,) For how long shall thy journey be? and when wilt thou return? So it pleased the king to send me; and I set him a time.

Moreover I said unto the king, If it please the king, let letters be given me to the governors beyond the river, that they may convey me over till I come into Judah; and a letter unto Asaph the keeper of the king's forest, that he may give me timber to make beams for the gates of the palace which appertained to the house, and for the wall of the city, and for the house that I shall enter into. And the king granted me, according to the good hand of my God upon me.
~Nehemiah 2:1-8

A good leader must have the spirit of discernment and must be a good listener. King Artaxerxes noticed that Nehemiah's countenance was different. Nehemiah was sad but bold. The King listened to Nehemiah's bold request and granted him even more than he requested. Nehemiah's boldness came from the Lord--he prayed before he answered the King. Often, we take matters into our hands and act before going to God. This is a very heart-warming story, as God made it possible for Nehemiah to travel to his homeland without problems from the owners of the land through which he was traveling.

And a certain Jew named Apollos, born at Alexandria, an eloquent man, and mighty in the scriptures, came to Ephesus. This man was instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in the spirit, he spake and taught diligently the things of the Lord, knowing only the baptism of John. And he began to speak boldly in the synagogue: whom when Aquila and Priscilla had heard, they took him unto them, and expounded unto him the way of God more perfectly.

And when he was disposed to pass into Achaia, the brethren wrote, exhorting the disciples to receive him: who, when he was come, helped them much which had believed through grace: for he mightily convinced the Jews, and that publicly, shewing by the scriptures that Jesus was Christ.
~Acts 18:24-28

When you see an opportunity to build up a brother or sister, seize it. Aquila and Priscilla saw in Apollos a young man with great potential, but who lacked knowledge. They did not stay on the sidelines or wait for someone else to step in. They taught Apollos what was missing from his gospel teaching. For his part, Apollos was humble to receive this correction. This resulted in a high recommendation when he left to go to another church. He used the new knowledge to "vigorously" (v. 28) defend Jesus as the Christ. How do you react when others point out gaps in your knowledge?

Now there was at Joppa a certain disciple named Tabitha, which by interpretation is called Dorcas: this woman was full of good works and almsdeeds which she did. And it came to pass in those days, that she was sick, and died: whom when they had washed, they laid her in an upper chamber. And forasmuch as Lydda was nigh to Joppa, and the disciples had heard that Peter was there, they sent unto him two men, desiring him that he would not delay to come to them.

Then Peter arose and went with them. When he was come, they brought him into the upper chamber: and all the widows stood by him weeping, and shewing the coats and garments which Dorcas made, while she was with them.

But Peter put them all forth, and kneeled down, and prayed; and turning him to the body said, Tabitha, arise. And she opened her eyes: and when she saw Peter, she sat up. And he gave her his hand, and lifted her up, and when he had called the saints and widows, presented her alive. And it was known throughout all Joppa; and many believed in the Lord.
~Acts 9:36-42

What the world needs now are leaders who care. We have enough wealth to eliminate starvation, yet many go to sleep hungry; we have the scientific knowledge to cure childhood diseases, yet childhood diseases that were once eliminated are infecting and claiming the lives of precious children. Tabitha cared, and her good works and charitable deeds affected the lives of others who mourned her death. Peter cared, and those who sent for him knew and had faith that he would do something. He did, and that made all the difference. What are you doing to care for the needy?

This is a true saying, if a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work. A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach; not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous; one that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity; (for if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?) not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil. Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.
~1 Timothy 3:1-7

The days we are living in call for leaders who are example-setters inside and outside the church. Church leaders have a responsibility to be good role models. Paul, in writing to Timothy, sets a high standard for church leaders: blameless, only one wife, temperate, sober-minded, good behavior, hospitable, and able to teach (v. 2). They must not be drunkards, violent, greedy for money, or covetous. A church leader should be able to govern their own house with obedient children. If you cannot rule your own house, you will not be able to take care of God's children. The standard is high but reachable.
