Today is the birthday of our beloved Red, White, and Blue! What a privilege and honor it is to be represented by such a powerful symbol of freedom and hope. As we recognize this special day that commemorates the adoption of the American flag as the official flag of our great nation—may we do so with deep gratitude and joyous thanksgiving. We are so BLESSED to live in the land of the free and the home of the brave! God bless America and Happy Flag Day!

Happy 248th birthday to the United States Army!

For nearly two and a half centuries the Army has defended the freedom of the American people at home and abroad.

America and the world are safer because of the brave men and women of our Army, many of whom serve in the great state of Texas.

ALIVE DAY #151: Fort Worth Police Department Officer Matt Brazeal, struck by vehicle June 13, 2020. Get ready for this one because it’s a miracle he isn’t dead. This post won’t do near the justice he deserves.

At 1130 hours that morning, Matt responded to a pursuit of a stolen vehicle in the area of 3000 West Loop 820. Matt got STOP Sticks set up and threw them out in the road as the suspect vehicle approached. The suspect swerved at the last minute as Matt recognized what was happening. The suspect struck Matt doing 70-90 mph, pulling him under the hood. Matt’s duty belt snagged under the car and he was dragged 100 feet before it broke and he came rolling out from underneath.

The suspect was later taken into custody. Trial is set for September 2023.

Here is the laundry list of Matt’s injuries:

Traumatic brain injury
Left ear almost ripped off
Extensive road rash everywhere
Multiple broken ribs
Collapsed lung
Completely dislocated left elbow
Broken right humerus
Perforated bladder
Pelvis was broken in three places
Left leg was almost ripped off
Broken left femur
Broken right ankle

When Matt was taken into the operating room, the doctor asked how he was doing. His reply? “I’ve had better days.”

Matt has endured *approximately* 60 surgeries totaling 108 hours. During his years of recovery, the mental side has been the hardest. As soon as he gets ahead of something, another surgery puts him two steps behind. Case in point, his last surgery was two days ago and he was upset about it. He is, however, nearing the end of this wretched process. HOPEFULLY. Light duty is projected to begin next month.

If you’d like to listen to Matt’s story in more detail, his two-part episode ( #88 and #89) is on the Two Cops One Donut podcast.

Happy alive day, Matt!
