Monday, August 24th, is the feast of Saint Bartholomew. Please join us for a said mass at 6:00 p.m.

Who is this apostle and what do we know about him?

Saint Bartholomew is one of the twelve apostles, but he is really only known to us by his being listed among the twelve as found in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke. He is sometimes presented as Nathanael, the friend of Philip, in the Gospel of John 1:47-49 and is declared by Jesus to be an "Israelite...in whom there is no deceit". Also, Jesus mentions that he saw him, "under the fig tree". But not much is known about St. Bartholomew. Tradition holds that he traveled to India and also to Armenia to preach the Gospel but was killed in Armenia by being skinned alive.

If you look at our stained glass window of St. Bartholomew in the church naive, you will notice that he is depicted as sitting underneath a fig tree. In the upper part of the window, you will see what is his skin hanging from a cross, thus depicting that he was skinned alive.
