When I was in Teen Challenge, God directed me to journal through my time there. Recently, God has led me back to this. Here is my journal from today:

“Now, therefore,” says the LORD,
“Turn to Me with all your heart,
With fasting, with weeping, and with mourning.”
13 So rend your heart, and not your garments;
Return to the LORD your God,
For He is gracious and merciful,
Slow to anger, and of great kindness;
And He relents from doing harm.

Joel 2:12-13

How often do we want God to restore what we’ve lost, yet we forget that we have a part in the restoration? God is not obligated to restore anything to a broken vessel; to do so makes it that much easier for us to become ungrateful and lose it again.

Instead, He wants us to come, broken vessel and all, and surrender. As Joel wrote, that surrender must be all of us (our heart) and not just lip service (our garment). When we do that, then He will restore only what we truly need, because He always gives us what’s best.

I’ve learned that my scars are there to remind the world of His scars for us. It was His scars that healed mine.
