Statement on the Passing of President Jimmy Carter
Today, Mayè and I join the nation in mourning the passing of President Jimmy Carter. President Carter embodied humility and servant leadership in his role as President of the United States and in how he and First Lady Rosalynn Carter continued to selflessly serve and live out their faith after leaving the White House. He often spoke publicly of his personal relationship with Jesus Christ and its central role in his daily life.
Whether he was leading in elected office, regularly teaching a Sunday School class at his home church, advancing human rights through the work of the Carter Center, or building homes and creating communities with Habitat for Humanity, President Carter demonstrated what it looks like when every Christian - clergy and laity - offers their prayers, presence, gifts, service, and witness to the world.
I admire the way President Carter pastored without a pulpit. Mayè and I offer our condolences and prayers to his family and all who loved him.
