Happy Global Coptic Day! Today marks the Entrance of the Lord Jesus Christ into the Land of Egypt. Don't forget to come celebrate with us next week on June 10, 1-5 pm. This is the icon of the Pantocrator located in St. Anthony's Monastery near the Red Sea. The style of iconography is heavily influenced by the hieroglyphics as they both utilize similar colors and shapes to help create the images. The hymn Gholghotha has roots in Ancient Egyptian Rites. The melody of the hymn was taken from an ancient song used when burying the Pharaoh. This is the Monastery of St. Meena located in Mariout. The monastery was built after Pope Cyril VI was elected to the patriarchate, building on top of the ancient site of the church of St. Meena.
