It was a perfect morning for apple picking! Our Kesher families met at Cook’s Orchard to pick apples and buy honey for our holiday goodies, then enjoyed a picnic by the pond. What a beautiful start to the holiday season! 🍎🍯🐝

During our Selichot service on Saturday evening, we ushered in the High Holy Days season of self-scrutiny and renewal. “Selichot” comes from the Hebrew for “forgiveness” and “pardon.”

Led by Rabbi Meir with music by Ronnie & Norm Greenberg, we marked the end of Shabbat with Havdalah, followed by meditative prayer and readings.

We later changed the Torah covers to white for the New Year in the Sanctuary. The Torah covers in the Goldstine-B’nai Jacob Chapel were changed earlier by the morning minyan.

The service ended with the sound of the shofar. Thanks to Don Zelman and Norm Greenberg!

Our Zachor (Remember) Committee welcomed a special group of local educators and leaders on Thursday night to join together to share ideas, learn of resources, and plan for a valuable school year of Holocaust education. We explored ways that the Jewish community could support the educators.

The excitement and enthusiasm were clear. It was wonderful to learn of the intentions of our leaders and educators from middle schools, high schools (public and private), and PFW. Special thank you to Kathy Sider for coordinating our working dinner.

Zachor focuses on Holocaust Education. It is a joint effort of Congregation Achduth Vesholom, the Jewish Federation of Fort Wayne, and IHGS Purdue Fort Wayne’s Institute for Holocaust and Genocide Studies.

Attending were Jennifer Long from Bishop Dwenger High School; Josh Grubaugh and Erin White from New Haven High School; Adrienne McKaig from Memorial Park Middle School; Beth Meneely from New Tech High School; Nathan Armstrong, a student from New Tech High School; Dr. David Lindquist, a Holocaust scholar who teaches Confronting the Shoah; Dr. Steve Carr, director of PFW’s Institute for Holocaust and Genocide Studies; Zachor Committee Chair and Temple member Kathy Sider; Federation Executive Director Michael Theise; and Temple President Beth Zweig
