This quotation in the classic written by Thomas a’ Kempis, The Imitation of Christ, wisely counsels us: “Be not angry that you cannot make others as you wish them to be, since you cannot make yourself as you wish to be.”
Now that is profound! What I get from his words is to two-fold:
1. We must be loving, forbearing, and forgiving of others when they do not do as we would wish;
2. We must concentrate consistently upon God’s grace and power to help us toward becoming more what He would have us be.
The assignment is huge, yet it is what is expected of us as believers in God’s Holy One, our Redeemer, Jesus Christ, by the assistance of the Holy Spirit and His power at work within us.
God desires mercy not judgment, and grace instead of wrath.
It is always wise to allow a broad path for others, but a narrow path for ourselves, God helping us.
Amen!
