“Why has the LORD defeated us today before the Philistines? Let us bring the ark of the covenant of the LORD here from Shiloh, that it may come among us and save us from the power of our enemies… So the Philistines fought, and Israel was defeated, and they fled, every man to his home. And there was a very great slaughter, for thirty thousand foot soldiers of Israel fell. And the ark of God was captured, and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, died.” 1 Samuel 4: 3, 10-11
Good morning everyone! As we get started on a new week, we wanted o talk a bit about the Isrealites from this passage of scripture. Often times when we read about them, we read it from a third person perspective, which can cause us to judge them more harshly than we should because there are times were we are falling short just like they did.
In our scripture today, we find the Israelites mid-battle with the Philistines, and to their dismay… they are loosing. The first question they ask is “Why is God letting us get defeated?” when, when we read the passage… they never asked for God’s guidance on if they were supposed to engage in the battle in the first place. Then they think the solution is to bring the Ark into the midst of the battle (in an effort to force God’s hand) believing that will get them the victory; it in fact did not. Actually, it was made things worse because the Ark ends up being captured.
How many situations, plans, ideas, have we gone forward with without asking God whether or not we should even do them, then we get upset or confused when they aren’t working out the way we thought they would? Or, how many times have we tried to add God into the situation after the fact hoping that He will undo all the things that have happened, that wouldn’t have happened if we would have just went to Him first?
The bible tells us that “ In all your ways, acknowledge Him, and He will Direct your path” (Prov. 3:6). This is the cheat code, but it requires a standard of not allowing flesh and impatience lead the way. It means that sometimes His answers aren’t what we may want be they are always what we need to Him moving in our lives.
Let’s be sure we are moving with God. God bless you, cover, and keep you! Love you all! Have a blessed week!
