Good afternoon again, Brethren!
Christ Jesus came and gave up His Divine, God-like privileges, to minister to those He encountered physically… and now, after rising from the dead that Easter morning… He walks with us in the Spirit, defending the accusations of the evil one, in the presence of the Father. Like Paul said in Romans 8, “What can we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?” (Ro. 8:31). Amen!
He is certainly with us! May we believe this and trust His ways in all circumstances - “the good with the bad.” I always try to remember, God allows both.
Oh, that we truly understand all that this means each day as we battle against the flesh that we are wrapped up in. Adam and Eve succumbed —and the perfect creation from God was “cursed” for evermore, until our Lord returns. “All of creation groans” (Ro. 8:22).
Speaking of Romans 8… one of the most famous verses stands out (of course, it could be debated that all of Romans 8, might just be one of the top chapters in all the Bible!!!).
But, I digress… Romans 8:28:
“28 And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. (ESV)”
We who believe are all very familiar with this verse. But, what does each person take this to really mean?
For example, let’s take the phrase, “all things work together for good…”
What “good”? Certainly bad things happen to all people in this life (believers and unbelievers). So the “good” cannot necessarily mean things that we may find pleasing in this physical life (although blessings from God permeate this world constantly for “the just and the unjust.” - Matt 5:45). This “good” that the Holy Spirit inspired God to write, must have a more “Eternal” meaning!
I mean, look at Job… most “righteous” man in his geographical area (the land of Uz) according to God (Job 1:1). Yet, God brought (yes, I wrote it!), God brought (God is sovereign in even the most minute measures) what?!….
- [ ] Allowed his family to be murdered
- [ ] Allowed all his possessions to be stolen
- [ ] Allowed disease to totally immobilize him…
- [ ] … temporarily!*
Where’s the “good” in that? How does Romans 8:28 make any sense at all in the context of Job 1? It wouldn’t… unless we see “good” as the eternal, living gift, from God through, “the One HE sent,” Jesus Christ our Lord.
*Ah… but in the end, Job was blessed again - even more - because of his faithfulness (Job 42:12).
Hey! We will suffer! It is written all over the Word (Ro. 8:18, 1 Peter 5:1; 2 Cor 4:17; Psalm 34:19 and John 16:33, to name a few…).
Jesus said all who truly follow Him will pay the price. That’s why He commanded, “pick up your cross [grab your eventual suffering] … let him deny himself [our old self] and follow Me.” (Matt. 16:24; Luke 9:23).
Sure, we suffer in many different ways (persecution for believing and proclaiming, disease, broken-heartedness, anxiety, mental illness, hunger, addiction, etc) but, we understand that the “good” in Romans 8:28, is a home with Jesus in perfect harmony for eternity!!! Amen!
Well worth any price we pay here!!
So, we “run the race!” (running, as we well know, is hard especially towards the end). We “put on the ‘Armor of God’” and we “fight” “against wickedness in the heavenly realms.” Yes, we battle - fighting against Satan’s “schemes” (he and his minions). The adversary inflicts us, wants us to act poorly, with little faith, so he can accuse us before God (like he did at the beginning of the book of Job), every minute of everyday. Satan wants us to dishonor, and thus, debunk, God’s mission for each of us, so he can prove God wrong. He is on a mission to cause believers to dishonor God and de-glorify His Name among the peoples of the earth. He already knows he cannot have our souls — so he inflicts with, sometimes, with horrible events and situations… all under God’s providence (sovereignty).
We are called to battle (Eph. 6:10) for the eternal hope promised by our Triune God, in the name of Christ Jesus and by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Now look - I’m not saying we don’t already have it - we received our salvation from God because of the faith He so gracefully granted us - through His Son, but … I am saying we will be challenged by the “prince” of this “World System” and we have to navigate through these things each day.
Are we ready this very moment? Ready for the next circumstance - good or bad? Ready for all the moments that will surely come until we are glorified when Messiah returns?
I say again… Are we ready? Are we going to glorify God in all we do, in every circumstance, or not? Are we knowing Christ more and more each day? If you are, that’s beautiful, now get ready to be attacked and inflicted! (Again, look at Job, or Ester, or the Apostle Paul). Did all things “work for the good” for these great people of God (as many understand it)?
No.
Are they now home with the Lord? Most certainly! Praise God!! His “Good” wins!!!
Will we “stand firm” (Eph. 6:11-12) and have our Lord be honored… thus, receiving the “good” promised in Romans 8:28?
Let us pray:
“Lord God, we, your children by the blood of your Holy Son… ask that you will change our hearts (Deut. 30:6). Yes LORD! We plead with you to “circumcise” our hearts. And then LORD, please empower us to imitate the works of our Savior in all we endeavor to do. Grant to us the privilege - that we glorify You in every little thing we do. In the Holy Name of Christ Jesus we pray. Amen.”
