Last night the Texas Road Church of Christ gathered for our mid-week worship service. Together we sang, prayed, and studied the bible. Seth Burns spoke for us and talked about the Breastplate of Righteousness found in Ephesians 6:14.

Righteousness is integrity, virtue, purity of life, and correctness in thinking, feeling, and acting. If we know what is right, or in other words have the truth, but do not apply it to our lives, then there is little value in that knowledge. Righteousness is practicing what we know to be true.

The breastplate protected the wearer from the neck down to the midsection where the girdle would take over. If we do not put into practice the knowledge of truth then we are not wearing our breastplate to protect us against the wiles of the devil. James said we must not be hearers only but also doers of the word. Practice what you know to be true.

Sunday afternoon the Texas Road Church of Christ gathered again to worship the Lord in Spirit and in Truth. We had another visitor with us from another church in the area. Seth Burns was the speaker again. He continued his series on the Armor of God and talked about the Belt of Truth in Ephesians chapter 6 verse 14.

While a belt may seem insignificant and optional, that is not the case in the armor of God. The belt can be better described as a girdle which covers a large portion of the torso and holds on other pieces of armor. Over and over again we are warned against lies, false prophets, deceit, and those trying to pull the church away from God. If we are to combat these and many other sorts of deceit and lies then we must know the truth.

In order to know the truth we must dive into the word. Jesus said the word of God is truth (John 17:17). If we are to put on the Belt of Truth and keep it on we must dive into the word and stay there. Keep your mind on things; meditate on these things; lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven. Remember the truth, know it, be intimate with is, and remember that it is the truth that will lead you to victory in Christ.

Yesterday the Texas Road Church of Christ gathered to worship God and remember Jesus for His sacrifice for the sins of the world. We had a visitor with us but also have several out sick. Seth Burns was our speaker and he began a series talking about the Armor of God.

Paul’s letter to the Ephesians is a letter about Christian conduct. The entirety of the letter discusses a Christian’s faith, conduct, and character. All of this culminates at the end of the letter when Paul discusses the purpose of this letter. All of the instruction that Paul gives through the letter must be used and applied because we are in a spiritual battle of faith. This is discussed in Ephesians chapter 6 verses 10 through 13.

In this introduction to the Armor of God Paul describes the battle ground and the enemy. He first tells us to take courage and power from the Lord to accomplish what we must do. If we will put on the whole or entire armor and leave it on we will be able to withstand the forces of evil. These forces of evil we may not know exactly or precisely who or what they are but we can know they are forces that cannot withstand the power of God. It is not a physical battle but a spiritual battle. So, Paul says, put on the entire armor of God and you will be able to withstand and come out victorious against the onslaught of the devil.

Going into your weekend the Texas Road Church of Christ would like to give you a small passage of scripture to think about.

Jesus often used rhetorical questions to get His hearers to think about themselves and how they live their lives. Mark 4:21 is one such place.
“Is a lamp brought to be put under a basket or under a bed? Is it not to be set on a lampstand?”

Our lives are to be lived in the open. We are not to hide our faith or shrink back from persecution. Live your life for the Lord openly and He will take note. He will not forget but will provide you with all you need and reward you for your faithfulness.

Sunday afternoon the Texas Road Church of Christ was back to worship God on the Lord’s Day. We had a visitor from a local congregation in the city. Bill Joyce was our speaker and he continued his study in the book of Acts. He covered chapter seven verses 1-18.

This section of scripture is often called or referenced as the defense of Stephen. Stephen, though, did not defend himself. Instead he began to draw a picture of the history of Israel which in its conclusion proved that Jesus was the Christ and the Jews were wrong for crucifying Him. In these verses Stephen started with Abraham and talked of his faithfulness in the Lord. Then Stephen moved on to the Patriarchs, the sons of Jacob, and their treatment in Egypt. Stephen was not telling the Jews anything new but was instead reminding them of their own history and telling them the true side of the story.

Stick with us and hear the rest of Bill’s study in the amazing story and this amazing book in the New Testament.

Yesterday the Texas Road Church of Christ gathered for the first day of the week. As is the habit of the Christian each Lord’s Day we gathered to sing, pray, study, commune, and give to the Lord. We had three visitors with us from the local university. Seth Burns was our speaker. He talked about what Jesus said in Matthew chapter 10 verse 16.

Jesus said “Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves. Therefore be wise as serpents and harmless as doves.” This strange metaphor is one of the many times the Lord used the foolishness of the world to confound the wisdom of men. We, as God’s people, are sent out into a world that will persecute us as sheep looking to save rather than wolves or lions looking to destroy. But as sheep, Jesus said we must be wise as serpents. Often the serpent is representative as evil and deceptive. In the time of Jesus, however, they were viewed as wise and shrewd. That’s how the child of God must be. We are sheep yes, but we are not doormats. Be wise in your dealings with the world. Jesus also said we are to be as harmless as doves. The human kneejerk reaction to violence is violence. Jesus said though He came to save not to destroy. If we are to be followers of Christ we must follow Him in every aspect, including His harmlessness.

As you go into the weekend the Texas Road Church of Christ would again like to share a song with you that we sing quite often. It is called I Need Thee Every Hour written by Annie Sherwood Hawks. It is a song about our dependence on the Lord no matter the circumstances; whether good or bad.
I need Thee every hour
Most gracious Lord
No tender voice like Thine
Can peace afford
I need Thee every hour
Stay Thou nearby
Temptations lose their power
When Thou art nigh
I need Thee every hour
In joy or pain
Come quickly and abide
Or life is vain
I need Thee, O I need Thee
Every hour I need Thee
O bless me now, my Savior
I come to Thee
O bless me now, my Savior
I come to Thee

Last night the Texas Road Church of Christ was gathered together to worship the Lord in Spirit and in Truth. We had four visitors with us and together we sang, prayed, and studied the word of God. We had a guest speaker, Zach Weiberg from Houston, Texas. Zach spoke about the apostle Paul and the lesson we can learn from his life and his writings.

We can see the desire for spiritual life when he was consenting to Stephen's death in Acts 7. Paul's desire was to preach the gospel to the Gentiles according to Ephesians 3:8. Paul preached endlessly about the circumcision of the heart Romans 2:25-29. Paul's life is a great example of how God can transform the lives of wicked people given 1 Timothy 1:15. He trusted completely in God's plan according to 2 Timothy 1:12. And once Paul saw the truth, he could not unsee it and could not deny it 2 Timothy 2:8-19.
