🚨 ONE MORE DAY! 🚨

Family Affair Worship Center…

Tomorrow morning we’re gathering for a powerful Word from the Lord.

Many people are fighting unnecessary warfare because they keep exposing what God told them to protect.

This Sunday we’re talking about:

🔥 BUILD IN SILENCE
🔥 “Shut The Door Until The Oil Starts Flowing”

The widow’s miracle happened behind a closed door.

The oil flowed in private before it showed up in public.

Could it be that God is trying to build something in you before He reveals it through you?

📖 2 Kings 4:1-7 KJV

📚 Sunday School – 9:00 AM
🔥 Early Word Worship Service – 10:00 AM

Three Things That Keep Us from Hearing God

“The seed that fell among thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by life’s worries, riches and pleasures, and they do not mature.” Luke 8:14 (NIV)

You can’t hear God if your mind is crowded with other thoughts or concerns—particularly worries, finances, and activities. And if you’re always listening to music or watching tv, the circuits are going to be busy when God calls. That’s why it’s important to eliminate distractions.

Jesus says in Luke 8:7, “Some other seeds fell where thornbushes grew up and choked the plants” (CEV).

Jesus paints a mental picture here of seeds being planted in soil that’s already filled with weeds. So as the crop grows, weeds also grow up around it. And they begin to choke out the life of the crop, so it never bears fruit.

Here’s what Jesus says is the meaning of Luke 8:7: “The seed that fell among thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by life’s worries, riches and pleasures, and they do not mature” (Luke 8:14 NIV).

Three things choke out hearing God:

Worry. Worries are weeds. When you’re so busy with the problems and pressures of daily living, it makes it harder to hear God.

Riches. You can be so busy trying to pay your bills, so busy trying to get out of debt, so busy trying to make a little more, and so busy making a living that you don’t ever make a life.

Pleasure. There’s nothing wrong with pleasure. Just be careful that you don’t become so busy pursuing fun that you miss what God wants to say to you and the plans he has for your life.

Have you ever noticed how weeds don’t need cultivating? They grow automatically. In fact, weeds are a sign of neglect. If you see weeds in your yard or garden, it means it’s time to tend to it. The weeds in your spiritual life reveal that you might be neglecting time with God—who loves you deeply and wants to spend time with you.

When all the circuits are busy and the weeds of worry, riches, and pleasure are choking your relationship with God, it’s the perfect time to pause and get quiet. Take time to clear away the noise so you can hear God’s voice more clearly.

How Do You Develop Spiritual Roots?

“The seeds that fell on rocky ground are the people who gladly hear the message and accept it. But they don’t have deep roots, and they believe only for a little while. As soon as life gets hard, they give up.” Luke 8:13 (CEV)

During springtime, the grass in Southern California turns green and the wildflowers and poppies bloom. It’s really pretty! But the moment the rains stop, the hills turn brown again. Why? Because the grass has shallow roots. They can’t go down deep enough to reach the springs of water far beneath the ground.

So when plants don’t have deep roots, they may sprout and look healthy at first—but without the roots they need, they quickly wither.

Our spiritual lives work the same way: Without deep roots, our faith can’t hold steady when trouble comes.

The Bible says, “The seeds that fell on rocky ground are the people who gladly hear the message and accept it. But they don’t have deep roots, and they believe only for a little while. As soon as life gets hard, they give up” (Luke 8:13 CEV).

A lot of times we hear God’s Word and get excited about it, but we don’t allow it to change us. We act superficially. We respond emotionally. We’re moved impulsively. But we don’t take the time to let God’s Word sink in.

Nobody wants to be a shallow person. Instead, you want to have deep spiritual roots so that when recession comes and lasts several years, you’re able to keep bearing fruit. When rough winds blow and someone in your family gets sick or a close friend dies, you’re able to stand, because you’ve got roots.

How do you develop spiritual roots? You can start by having a meaningful daily time with God. As you take time to pray, worship, and read the Bible, you’re going to be amazed at how this simple practice strengthens your life. The more you get to know God, the more you’ll love him! In fact, the main objective isn’t just to study about him but to spend time with him. It’s not just study time; it’s relationship time!

Another way to grow spiritual roots is to connect regularly with a small group of believers. None of us has a complete perspective on life. We all have blind spots. That’s why you need a small group—because they can see things in your life you can’t see. As you encourage one another, you’ll learn from each other and grow deeper roots. We’re better together!

When you spend daily time with God and connect regularly with a small group, you won’t dry up or get blown away when the pressure is on.

Instead, your spiritual roots will grow deep, and your faith will stay steady no matter what.

Talk It Over

• Why do you think it’s easy to give up when life gets hard?

Three Mental Barriers to Hearing God’s Voice

“Get rid of all the filth and evil in your lives, and humbly accept the word God has planted in your hearts, for it has the power to save your souls.”James 1:21 (NLT)

We’ve all noticed that a cell phone’s reception quality varies widely, depending on your location. The same is true when hearing God’s voice. You must be positioned correctly to hear him speak.

God wants to talk to us, but sometimes we aren’t tuned in or willing to hear. Or we’ve already decided to do what we want to do—and if we’re honest, it’s not always what God wants us to do. And when our mind is closed off to him, it’s harder to hear his voice and follow his plans for our lives.

But if you really want to hear from God, you have to understand what’s keeping you from hearing him. There are three mental barriers that keep your mind closed to God’s message:

Pride. If you think you don’t need God in your life and prefer to handle things on your own, you’re probably not listening for God to speak. Pride keeps you from being open to the possibility that he might want to say something to you.

Fear. A lot of people can’t hear God because they’re afraid to hear God speak. Some think that hearing God’s voice and sensing how he’s leading them makes them a religious fanatic.

Bitterness. When you hold on to hurt, resentment, or a grudge, your heart can become hardened—and that makes it difficult to hear from God. A hard heart can also make you defensive, even to God’s love.

Perhaps you’ve been hurt deeply—whether it happened this week or years ago—and you’re still holding on to it. I want you to know: You’ve got to let it go. Not for someone else’s sake, but for your sake. Resentment is a self-inflicted wound that allows people from your past to keep hurting you today. You need to let it go, not because they deserve forgiveness but because you need to get on with your life. You need to get rid of the pride, fear, and bitterness that keep you from hearing God’s voice and living out his purposes.

James 1:21 says, “Get rid of all the filth and evil in your lives, and humbly accept the word God has planted in your hearts, for it has the power to save your souls” (NLT).

“Humbly accept” means you let go of your pride and stop trying to figure it out on your own. This is the key to opening your mind and heart so that you can hear from God—the One who created you, loves you, and wants to talk to you.

Talk It Over

• How do you hear God’s voice or sense his leading? In what ways has he spoken to you?

• What changes do you need to make in your life so that you can get rid of the “filth and evil” and hear God’s voice?

• Why do we sometimes equate hearing God’s voice with religious fanaticism?
