The Diocese of Venice in Florida is saddened to announce the passing of Father Patrick Oliver Toner, Parochial Vicar at the Church of the Resurrection of Our Lord Parish in Fort Myers. Father passed away July 9, 2025, at the age of 80.

Father Toner was born in 1944 in Trim, County Meath, Ireland, the second child of Patrick and Philomena Toner. After attending St. Francis Franciscan College in Gormanston, County Meath, and the Jesuit Seminary, Milltown Park, Dublin, Ireland, he was ordained to the priesthood on July 16, 1971, in Dublin for the Carmelite Order.

Following his ordination, Father served for the Carmelite Order in Kildare Town, Ireland, as well as at Parishes in Davis, California, and Tampa, Florida.

Father Toner began his priestly ministry in the Diocese of Venice from 1980 to 1984 first at St. Andrew Parish in Cape Coral, before returning to his religious community in Dublin. Father returned to Florida in 1988 and was appointed as Parochial Vicar at the Church of the Resurrection of Our Lord Parish in Fort Myers, where he served for the past 37 years. He was incardinated into the Diocese of Venice in Florida on April 26, 1999.

Dear Resurrection Parishioners and Guests,

Please note: our winter/spring weekend Mass schedule remains in effect for the foreseeable future! (Disregard the previous erroneous announcements to the contrary at Mass and in the bulletin)

Once seasonal attendance goes down as summer approaches, as is our yearly practice, we will reduce the number of weekend Masses and announce this change ahead of time.

Thank you and God bless!

This year, the joys of the Easter season and welcoming new converts to the Faith was mingled with sorrow about the passing of Pope Francis. Here at Resurrection, we have been praying for the late Holy Father, the cardinals and upcoming conclave. Here's a few pictures of the Easter Vigil and the days of mourning following it. In the last picture, we see a reminder of the time Fr. Shawn was able to meet with Pope Francis when he was a seminarian. It is a papal zucchetto that was held and blessed by the Pope.

"We adore You O Lord, and we praise You, for by Your holy cross, You have redeemed the world."

4/19- Holy Saturday: Church closed for preparations and cleaning until opening in the evening prior to the 8:30 Solemn Mass of the Easter Vigil.
