Merry Christmas!
“He, remembering His mercy, has helped His servant Israel.” - The Virgin Mary (Luke 1:54), “Behold, this child is appointed for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign that is opposed (and a sword will pierce through your own soul also), so that thoughts from many hearts may be revealed.” Luke 2:34
Christmas is a holiday rich with images and symbolism. In certain ancient Christian art traditions, the infant Jesus is depicted lying in a manger that resembles a tomb, with the Greek letters representing the phrase “The One Who Is” about His head. The incarnate and eternal God was born into this world of sin, suffering, and death and His road to defeating death began with the manger. In Luke chapter 2, Jesus’ mother is told that a sword will pierce her soul while her Son reconciles all things through His incarnation and death. Surely, her sufferings began in the earliest moments of her Son’s life, as she bore God within her, gave birth in a stable, and laid her holy Son in a lowly manger.
Also (fun fact), why is Christmas celebrated December 25? For those who say ‘paganism,’ consider this: Ancient Christian tradition held that Jesus’ life began at his conception on the Passover. His conception was calculated to be March 25 (based on Passover records). Therefore, the conception of Jesus at the Annunciation is celebrated March 25. Christ’s birth is celebrated 9 months later - Dec. 25.
“Merry Christmas, everyone. I’m grateful for your support and encouragement of this project in ‘25. Praise God that He is with us in His holy and incarnate Son, our Savior Jesus Christ.” - Ben Lansing, Creator of Our Church Speaks
Almighty God, you have given your only-begotten Son to take our nature upon him, and to be born this day of a pure virgin: Grant that we, who have been born again and made your children by adoption and grace, may daily be renewed by your Holy Spirit; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom with you and the same Spirit be honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen.
