Seafarers' House

Seafarers' House Seafarers' House is a safe, friendly place where mariners can connect to their families, relax and get help if needed. They all miss home.

The Seafarers’ House at Port Everglades is open throughout the year as a safe, welcoming place where mariners can connect with their communities and families, seek guidance and get emergency help if needed. Company Overview
A tradition of nearly 200 years, active in hundreds of ports worldwide reached Florida in 1988. It was then that a seminary intern from Spain joined forces with a Coral Gables

attorney and the Episcopal Bishop of Southeast Florida to start new chaplaincy amid rapid maritime industry growth in South Florida. Seafarers’ House began with a 400 sq ft hospitality center that opened at Port Everglades in 1989. Today, the 4,300 sq ft facility hosts over 100,000 crew members each year and the need for our services continues to grow. TODAY’S SEAFARERS

Most shipping companies fly foreign flags and recruit their crew from global labor markets. By global standards, these are valuable jobs that pay in a stable currency (i.e., US dollar). These hardworking men and women leave their families behind for up to a year at a time in order to support them. Cargo crew are especially invisible to the societies that they serve, leaving them sometimes vulnerable to forms of exploitation that only port chaplains see. Over 95% of everything we use reaches us by ship, but the crews who travel the world's oceans, contending with harsh weather, loneliness and increasingly with piracy issues in order to support not only their families but also our way of life are often forgotten. As a member of an international network of sister centers, shipvisitors, and staff, Seafarers' House can assist mariners through our connections with sister agencies as well as by providing local assistance in many ways both large and small. Description
Seafarers’ House is open throughout the year as a safe, friendly place where mariners can connect to their families, relax, ask questions about the community, and get emergency help if needed. We are proud to provide both practical and emergency assistance and support for seafarers in need. General Information
OUR SERVICES

When mariners arrive at our port, they may have little shore time to contact love ones, go shopping or relax. Our convenient center is inside the port and readily acccessible for those who want to connect with loved ones by phone or email through the free wi-fi service available. And because life so far from home is hard, there is often counseling to do after the caller hangs up. Clergy from a range of faith traditions are available through our Pastoral Care Team. The maritime ministry tradition is Christian founded, but we strive to honor the religious faiths of all who visit us. Our small store sells everything from soap to foreign newspapers. Free van service is available and there is a secure, reliable system for transferring hard-earned cash back home to the loved ones seafarers support. FUNDING SOURCES

Funding is derived from a blended stream of fee-based client services, special fundraising events, charitable gifts and grants. Additional support is needed to expand operations in a rapidly growing Port Everglades, so that visiting mariners and hard-working members of our local port community can continue to enjoy the same help contacting their families and a place of respite when they find themselves in need. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Each year, hundreds of people volunteer with Seafarers’ House. Some board cargo ships to welcome newly arriving crew. Clerical help is always needed and volunteers help raise funds for Seafarers’ House through a series of special events. We ask volunteers for a few hours at least once a month, but some come several times a week. We offer them a chance to meet wonderful people from all over the world, and they tell us that they receive much more than they give.

🌪️ Atlantic Hurricane Season is Here! 🌪️

💙⚓ Farewell, Our Friends of the SLV Honduras ⚓💙

Today is a day filled with both joy and sadness.

Joy, because after months of uncertainty, waiting, challenges, and perseverance, the remaining crew members of the SLV Honduras are finally going home to their families and loved ones.

Sadness, because we must say goodbye to friends who became part of our Seafarers’ House family.

Since February, we have walked this journey together. We shared conversations, meals, prayers, laughter, hopes, disappointments, and countless moments that brought us closer as friends. We visited the ship, brought food, water, supplies, energy drinks, sweet treats, care packages, and a hotspot so the crew could stay connected with their families. We shared music, Bible studies, painting activities, puzzles, games, and friendship. Through it all, we witnessed incredible strength, patience, resilience, and faith.

The painting you gifted us will always hold a special place in our hearts. It is more than a picture of a ship—it is a reminder of your journey, your friendship, and the bond we formed during these months together. It will remind us that even during difficult times, kindness, compassion, and hope can bring people together from every corner of the world.

Thank you for allowing us to be part of your story.

Thank you for your friendship, your smiles, your courage, and your trust.

As you return home and begin new chapters in your lives, know that you leave behind friends who care deeply about you and who will continue to keep you in our prayers.

May God bless each of you, protect your travels home, bring joy to your families, and guide you safely wherever your next voyage may lead.

You came to Port Everglades as visitors.
You leave as family. Fair winds and following seas, our friends.

You will always have a home at Seafarers’ House, and you will never be forgotten.

With love and gratitude,

The Seafarers’ House Family 💙⚓🙏

🌕🪷 Happy Vesak from Seafarers’ House ⚓💙

Vesak 2026 is observed on May 31, 2026, by many Buddhist communities around the world. Today, Buddhists celebrate Vesak, the most sacred day in Buddhism, commemorating the birth, enlightenment, and passing of Siddhartha Gautama.

Vesak is a time for reflection, compassion, kindness, gratitude, and peace. It reminds us of the importance of caring for one another and bringing hope and understanding to our communities.

At Seafarers’ House, we are honored to serve seafarers, cruise ship crews, cargo ship mariners, port workers, travelers, and members of the maritime community from many nations, cultures, and faith traditions.

To all who are celebrating Vesak while at sea or far from home, please know that you are remembered, appreciated, and welcomed here. May this special day bring peace to your heart, strength for your journey, and blessings to your loved ones.

All are welcome at Seafarers’ House — a home away from home for the maritime community. 💙⚓

Heavenly Father,

We lift up every seafarer serving at sea today, no matter their nationality, language, or background. Watch over those working aboard cargo ships, cruise vessels, tankers, offshore vessels, tugboats, and all who make their living on the waters far from home.

Guide them through calm seas and storms alike. Grant them wisdom in their duties, strength for each day's work, and peace during moments of loneliness and uncertainty. Protect them from danger, fatigue, illness, and fear.

Lord, shield them from hurricanes, rough seas, severe weather, accidents, piracy, war, conflict, and every threat they may encounter during their voyages. Be their refuge in times of uncertainty and their safe harbor in moments of distress. Keep watch over every vessel, every crew member, and every journey across the oceans of the world.

Let Your light shine upon the waters before them. Help them find encouragement, friendship, and mutual respect among their crewmates. May they experience Your presence in every sunrise, every wave, and every safe harbor.

Bless their families and loved ones waiting ashore. Comfort those who miss them, strengthen their relationships, and bring hope during times of separation. Grant safe voyages, peaceful hearts, and joyful reunions when their contracts are complete.

As Your Word says in Psalm 107:29-30:

"He made the storm be still, and the waves of the sea were hushed. Then they were glad that the waters were quiet, and He brought them to their desired haven."

May Your peace calm every storm, Your hand guide every voyage, and Your love sustain every seafarer.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
