I'm about to turn 55, and I've been a pilot for 26 years. I am no genius, but I have always been a diligent professional. When I was 54, I started to master the Airbus A350, the most modern passenger aircraft. It was not easy, because for the previous 25 years I had been flying a Boeing 767, which is much simpler. Airbus is fundamentally different from Boeing in many ways.
At Delta Airlines, I was the most senior pilot who tried to get certified for the A350. The program included a 7,000-page manual, numerous simulators, and challenging exams. People told me it was impossible, but I did it. My learning ability remained at the level it was when I was young.
Age is not a sentence. There are people who are able to master complex tasks at the age of 30 or 90. The main thing is not to doubt yourself and not to succumb to stereotypes. Don't underestimate the elderly - one day you will be appreciated for who you are, not for your age.
