St. Lucy's Guide to Disability Inclusion in Faith Based Organizations My name is Bob Furtado. He serves on the Committee of Persons with Physical Disability of the National Catholic Partnership on Disability.

I am a blind Roman Catholic who started this page to provide a venue for people with disabilities to share our ideas, experiences and resources in order to build community and deepen our faith. Robert Furtado
Bob is a blind, seasoned disability advocate and theologian who has partnered with The American Academy on Religion and The Society on Biblical Literature. He has been a member of the Insti

tute on Theology and Disability for fifteen years. His work history includes seven years as the Director of an Independent Living Center. In his retirement, he is pursuing a PhD in Practical Theology at Aberdeen University and promoting disability advocacy within the Church.

Hello everyone I wanted to bring something to your attention today that I believe is important especially for our community The ecumenical patriarch in 1989 established a national Day of prayer for the care of creation and the Roman Catholic Church adopted it soon after this is extremely important especially for the disability community because it shows because it shows that whether you have a disability or not we all have a responsibility for praying for the care of our common home as Pope Francis called the Earth in his encyclical

Another representation of disability at the world cup was the performance of of tenor Andrea bocelli performing at the opening ceremony in Mexico City this is one of the most inclusive moments and representative moments for people with disabilities on the most public stage of public stages this is an extremely proud moment for me being a person who identifies as blind themselves

In honor of disability pride month which begins today and since the world cup is going on I want to mention one of the biggest representations of disability that I've ever seen it any sporting event One of the traditions of FIFA is that during the national anthem ceremony kids that are selected get to walk out onto the field with both of the teams that are participating in the corresponding matches well during the opening ceremony of the world cup when Mexico plays South Africa one of the kids that was participating in the ceremony and walked out with the Mexican team was a person in a wheelchair this is the clearest form of direct representation and disability and inclusion that I have ever seen this is absolutely amazing I cannot believe it and this is one of the most truly inclusive experiences that I have ever witnessed or have seen

Today July 1st 2026 marks the opening of disability pride month a time that is extremely important to the disability community and all people with disabilities with the with the 4th of July approaching as we prepare to celebrate the nation's 250th anniversary of independence let us not forget that for the disability community which we will commemorate disability independence Day which is the anniversary of the signing of the ADA we still have plenty of work to do because still to this day unfortunately people with disabilities whether it is physical or non-visible are not completely integrated fully into all aspects of societal life

Good morning everyone I wanted to talk to you today about something that I found most interesting this weekend we celebrated corpus Christi the commemoration of the body and blood of Christ this can be applicable to us as well the disability The messages of corpus Christi can apply to us the disability community as well I heard my priest stayed in his homily over the weekend at Mass Jesus in the Eucharist comes to all whether a person uses a wheelchair or whether a person walks Jesus in the Eucharist comes to all we do not have to be perfect in order for Jesus to humble himself and come into our lives these concepts can apply not only exclusively to us but to the entire church and world but this can apply specifically to the disability community because we know that Jesus does not come only to people that have it all together we don't have to be perfect to have a relationship with God Jesus thought enough of us all of us to humble himself in just the simple variance of bread and w**e in order to show all of us that he would always be with us Jesus lives in all of us whether we do you use mobility aids or whether we walk back and forth we all have the amago day the image of God including people with the people with disabilities not just physical but intellectual and invisible disability as well
