In this week’s message, we examine the rest of the qualifications for spiritual leaders laid out in 1 Timothy 3. While these qualities relate to all Christians, leaders have an even greater responsibility to live them out as examples and models for others to follow. What keeps these qualities from becoming a tiring checklist of obligations or an unattainable standard that leaves us with a constant sense of failure? It’s the recognition that Paul is describing for us a life of consistent spirituality and that these character qualities grow out of our relationship with God. The Lord installs these qualities in faithful leaders as they become aware of the demands of their calling and their total dependence on God to fulfill their calling and ministry. See you Sunday!

Here are our Pause and Reflect questions from our second message in the series on 1 Timothy 3 on the qualifications and qualities of church leaders.
1. What does it look like for a person to live a life that is “above reproach?” The parallel passage in Titus 1:6 says that an elder is to be “blameless.” 1 Timothy 6:14 describes being “above reproach” as living a “stainless” life? What are the kinds of stains on a person’s life that would disqualify them from serving as an elder or pastor in the church?
2. Who is a spiritual leader whose life and example have had a major influence on your life? What were the things that stood out and what were the things about his/her life that made you want to follow or imitate their example?
3. Why does Paul put so much emphasis on family life when discussing the qualifications of an elder? What’s the connection between managing a home and managing the church? Do these descriptions disqualify those who are single or who do not have children?
4. What is the most likely meaning of the statement that the elder is to be “the husband of one wife?” How does it help to answer this question when we see that what Paul literally says is that he is to be “a one woman man?”
5. When it states that an elder “manages his household” well, what does this look like? What qualities should he exemplify and what is expected of the children of elders/pastors here and in Titus 1:6? How can the church help to make sure that a pastor or elder is keeping the right priorities when it comes to ministry and family life?

Your character matters more than your credentials. Every believer—pastor, parent, or pew-sitter—is called to live above reproach. And here's the good news: God's grace makes it possible.

We continue this Sunday to look at the theme of church leadership from Timothy and Titus, and the primary goal of leadership is influence and example. Leaders have the qualities that enable others to follow them as examples, and that influence for church leaders begins at home and in their daily lives. We also see that these qualities for church leaders are the qualities that God desires for all Christians, because every believer has places of influence where we can be an example of what it means to follow Christ. We're looking forward to seeing you this Sunday!

Here are some Pause and Reflect questions related to our opening message on the qualities of church leaders in 1 Timothy 3.
1. How do the offices of elder and deacon complement one another in the church? What is the primary function of each of these offices?
2. How do you think we can recognize someone who has the strong desire to do the noble work of being an overseer in the church? What will be different about their priorities, focus, and commitments in light of this strong desire (3:1)
3. What does Paul particularly emphasize when focusing on the qualities of an elder in 3:2-7? Why do these qualities seem to be fairly ordinary and what is God especially seeking from those who lead the church?
4. Why does the NT as a whole place an emphasis on the plurality of eldership in the local church?
5. How does the concept of the priesthood of all believers in the NT go along with this emphasis on the need for godly leaders that we see in 1 Timothy 3?
