We all know the story of David and Goliath in 1 Samuel 17 well. Here are some Pause and Reflect questions that can help us reflect more fully on what the story is designed to teach us.

1. What are some reasons that we should read this passage as more than a story encouraging us to be like David or to find our inner David? Why should we look for OT stories to do more than just give us role models to follow or avoid?
2. What differences do we see between Saul and David in the story? Why is it ironic that Saul is not the one going out to fight Goliath? How does this story anticipate David replacing Saul as the king of Israel?
3. What do David’s words in the story teach us specifically about the honor and greatness of God?
4. What does David recount in the story about his past experiences with God? Can you think of specific times in your life when God has demonstrated his help, presence, or power to answer prayer in ways that encourage you to trust God in times of crisis in your life?
5. How does the story of David’s victory over Goliath foreshadow the greater victory that Jesus won for us?

David and Goliath is one of the best known stories in all the Bible, but we have to see the story from two different angles to fully understand all that is designed to teach us. It’s more than a children’s Sunday School story. The story first highlights the faith of David who recognizes that the Lord is greater than his enemy, and David’s faith in the Lord is what prompts this great victory. At another level, David foreshadows Jesus as Israel’s greatest deliverer and king who defeats the powers of sin and darkness. We will learn about Saul’s fear, David’s faith, slingshots, Philistines, giants, and Benjamites as we explore this great story. We will also join together as we partake in communion. It’s going to be a great morning and we can’t wait to worship with you.

Here are our Pause and Reflect questions on the story of Saul and the medium at Endor from 1 Samuel 28 as the story relates to God’s guidance in our lives:

1. What were the ways that Saul had cut off the lines of communication from God that had made it impossible for him to receive guidance from God when he most needed it?
2. What were the different ways that the pagans received revelation from their gods or the spirit realm and why had God said that these things were off limits and out of bounds for his people?
3. How do you explain the appearance of Samuel the prophet when the medium attempts to conjure him up?
4. What were some of the key lessons that the message helped you to learn about listening to God and receiving his guidance for our lives?
5. What are some of the ways that common ideas about finding the will of God are different from what the Bible teaches about the will of God?
