Sermon Preparation: Joshua 2

In Joshua 2, "Rahab – Grace That Redeems the Most Unlikely," we see how God’s grace reached a Canaanite woman with a broken past and transformed her into an instrument of salvation. Joshua 2 shows Rahab’s faith as she hides the Israelite spies, trusting in the Lord she barely knew. God is always planning to rescue one woman and her family as the walls of destruction fall. Her story reminds us that no one is too far for God’s redeeming grace. Join us as we explore how faith in God can rewrite any life story.

Sermon Preparation: Matthew 8:28-34

This Sunday we start our summer series on trophies of God’s grace. In our text, Matthew 8:28-34, we’ll meet two men captured hideously by the powers of darkness. Jesus delivers them by the word of his power to return them to glory of true humanity. What a testimony to the love of Jesus. But what do we make of the reaction of their neighbors? Come to find out.

Sermon Preparation: Malachi 2

What does God think of me? Have you ever wondered what God's disposition is toward you? We are both sinners and saints, law breakers and covenant keepers. We have our own unrighteousness and the righteousness of Christ, but how does God think about us? In one of the most stirring passages of these minor prophets, on the heels of statements of arrogance, pride, and the rebuke of the Lord, God makes a humbling conclusion. He says that those who fear the Lord, shall be His "treasured possession". And this is the statement that prepares us for the end of this book, which is the beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Join us Sunday as we conclude these twelve minor prophets.

Sermon Preparation: Malachi 1

The book of Malachi is a hypothetical conversation between God and man. At least six times in this book, God makes a statement, man questions the statement, and then God gives evidence to affirm his initial statement. The first and most powerful of these interactions comes at the outset of this book. The Lord says, "I have loved you" and man responds, "how have you loved us?" God declares a fact, man responds with a feeling. Of course, this feeling is not unexpected; it is the common plight of God's people to feel as if God does not love them. But God does love His people. Join us on Sunday as we look at the evidence of God's love toward us, through the mouth of Malachi.

Sermon Preparation: Haggai 2

In the late 500’s BC, after some of the Jews had returned to Jerusalem, Haggai the prophet was sent by God, to instruct the people to continue building the temple. They had become frustrated and complacent. Upon hearing Haggai’s words and being moved by the Spirit of God, the people resumed work on the temple. However, Haggai’s book isn’t simply about resuming construction on a building; the willingness of the people to serve the Lord in this matter corresponds directly with the condition of their heart towards the Lord. Even though they were hard toward Him, God brought about revival within them and among them. Join us Sunday as we discuss the look, feel, and substance of revival that comes from the Spirit of God.

Sermon Preparation: Zechariah 14

In Zechariah 14, the Lord gives the prophet a vivid, intense, and action-filled vision of a "new age" centered on Jerusalem. The city seems to be the focal point. The people of God are in tribulation and then the Lord comes. Upon His coming the people are saved through a valley that is created by splitting the Mt of Olives in half, and the enemies of the Lord are devastated by a deep rot in their flesh and bones. A river flows from Jerusalem, survivors from the nations celebrate the Festival of Tabernacles, and at the end, even the most common things are made holy. The vision is specific and vibrant, but there is no doubt that its meaning is to bring more depth and context to the advent of the Lord Jesus Christ. This cataclysmic vision is a promise of a future day when "living water will flow out of Jerusalem (v.8)" and "the Lord will be king over the whole earth (v.9)". An age that was inaugurated with the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Sermon Preparation: John 2:1-11

In his gospel, John records seven signs from the ministry of Jesus, each teaching us an aspect of who he is and what he has come to do. This week, we will look at the first of those signs: Jesus turning water into wine at a wedding in Cana. In this sign, we see that Jesus has come to offer true joy, full purification, and everlasting life. The "wine" of this world will always run out, but in Christ we can truly taste and see that the Lord is good.

Sermon Preparation: Zechariah 12:10-13:1

This week we continue working through Zechariah, and in Zechariah 12 we read more Messianic promises that are increasingly clear, intense, and evocative. In this passage, the prophet describes a King pierced by the people, and, as a result, God Himself is pierced. As a result, there is weeping and mourning in the land. The prophecy would seem to be a message of gloom and doom, except for the final verdict of the prophecy: the Lord will pour out His Spirit on the people, and on that day there will be a fountain opened up to cleanse the people from their sin and unrighteousness. Join us Sunday as we meditate on the gospel according to Zechariah!

Sermon Preparation: Zechariah 9:9-17

On Easter Sunday, we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who conquered the grave by divine power and according to the perfect plan of redemption. We are also in the midst of the book of Zechariah, a prophet of the Lord who prophesied 500 years before Jesus walked the earth. Thankfully, these two stories come together seamlessly in Zechariah 9:9-17. Join us on Sunday, as we contemplate the wonder and awe of the crucifixion and the resurrection, through the words of the prophet Zechariah.

Behold, a your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he!
