The Christmas story is more than a familiar nativity scene—it is the story of God's providence unfolding through the events of world history. In Luke 2:1–7, Caesar Augustus appears to be the most powerful man in the world. He commands an empire stretching millions of square miles, and when he orders a census, nations respond. Yet Luke reminds us that even emperors serve the purposes of God.

In this message, we explore the contrast between Augustus and Jesus. Augustus was called savior, bringer of good news, and even son of god by the Roman world. Yet today he is little more than a footnote in God's story, while the child born in Bethlehem is worshiped around the globe.

We will examine how God used a pagan ruler, a census, and a long journey to fulfill His promise that the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem. This is the doctrine of providence: God orchestrating all things according to His perfect will.

We also consider the humility of Christ, wrapped in cloths and laid in a manger, and the call to follow Him through a life of faith, surrender, and spiritual rebirth. The gospel invites us to die to ourselves so that we might truly live in Christ.
