Saturday – Jesus is dead.

His body laid in a sealed tomb.

Soldiers stood watch.

Mission accomplished, they’d gotten Him.

Or so they thought.

And for that day –

Silence.

Darkness.

Stillness inside a borrowed tomb.

All hope was lost.

Again, or so they thought.

Because even though they couldn’t see it -

God was still working.

In the silence there was still hope.

So when you feel like He’s silent.

When you feel like all hope is lost.

Your answer hasn’t come.

You’ve prayed for so long.

You’ve waited for so long.

Remember the tomb.

Worship in the waiting.

Because God isn’t done just yet, friend.

Redemption is coming.

And if anyone can sit with you in the silence, in the stillness, in the waiting –

It’s Jesus.

He can relate.

Friday - Jesus is crucified.

Everything Jesus has endured all week now coming to a head.

All of those feelings boiling over alongside pain and suffering.

Tried for a crime He didn’t commit.

They chose to release Barrabas.

But Jesus?

"CRUCIFY HIM" they shouted.

Beaten.

Mocked.

Whipped.

Spit on.

Stripped of His clothes.

With the cross on His back He made His way to Golgotha’s hill.

Crown of thorns placed on His head.

THIS IS JESUS, KING OF THE JEWS inscribed above Him.

By three nails, His body hung with the weight of the world on His shoulders.

His side pierced with a sword.

In His final breaths “It is finished.”

The Son became the sacrifice so that we could have a Savior.

Our sin debt paid if we just surrender our life to follow Him.

Jesus, forgive me.

Jesus, save me.

So when it feels like the weight of the world is on your shoulders.

Anxiety, the hardships of faith, betrayal, the heavy weight of burdens and even blessings, agony, pain, suffering –

It’s all coming to a head.

You’re at the end of your rope, you feel too weak to go on.

You just can’t take it anymore.

You surrender.

Gosh, does He get it.

There is no one that gets it more than Jesus.

He’s there in solidarity during your suffering and He’s there in the surrender of it.

He’s there for the REAL.

He can relate.

Thursday - Jesus is arrested.

Jesus took some of his disciples to the Garden of Gethsemane.

Peter, James and John.

He tells them to keep watch and to pray while Jesus goes to pray on His own.

And He pleads with God.

Once -

Let this cup pass from me.

Twice –

Let this cup pass from me.

A third time –

Let this cup pass from me.

Scripture tells us in Luke 22 that Jesus’ sweat became like great drops of blood.

I picture Him there in the garden face down, tears streaming and sobbing because in just a few moments He will be handed over to death.

Jesus in pure agony.

But all three times, in the midst of His agony, His prayer ended with this –

Not my will be done, but yours.

We focus on Jesus’ sin saving sacrifice of the cross, why wouldn’t we, but I think we often forget the little detail that even Jesus sat in agony with this.

Even Jesus asked, if possible let this cup pass from me.

If there's a way God, please don't make me do this.

The lyrics running through my head for weeks now has been –

“If this cross is mine to bear, I’ll praise you anyway.”

See, Jesus didn’t necessarily want to be crucified.

At this point it was mental agony.

But the physical agony was coming.

All the while though, He was willing.

Not His will but God's be done.

Sometimes the hardships of life feel like pure agony.

We beg the Lord to just take it away, to make it stop.

To calm the storm.

But sometimes we have to see the storm through.

Just as Jesus had to see the cross through.

But the beauty of following Christ comes in the “praise you anyway”.

And that’s not always easy.

We don’t have a lens into the future to know how it’s going to turn out like He did.

The cross’ we bear on this side of Heaven get heavy.

They’re hard to bear – grief, guilt, shame, divorce, cancer, addiction.

That list could go on for ages.

But let’s talk about the cross’ we bear FOR the Lord.

That’s another side of this coin I don’t think we consider much.

What is it that God is asking of you?

Your calling, if you will, your purpose.

Those can feel heavy too.

Following the Lord sometimes means being uncomfortable, it means being scared, fearing rejection, opening yourself up to scrutiny, losing friends.

Surely not me Lord, I can’t do that..

I can’t teach Sunday School, I can’t sing, I can’t preach the Gospel, I can’t be a missionary, I can't witness to that person.

You couldn't possibly want me.

But He does.

And yes, it can feel agonizing battling the flesh to answer His call.

But He answered the call, He fulfilled prophesy.

Not His will but God’s be done, He did it.

So I urge you –

If you’re sitting in agony because of the storm you’re weathering, praise Him anyway.

And if you’re sitting in agony trying to put yourself aside to follow the calling the Lord has for you, pick up that cross.

Bear it for Him, because He bore Calvary for you.

Not your will but His be done.

He’s there in solidarity during your agony of all kinds and He’s there in your surrender to pick up the cross that’s yours to bear.

He’s there for the REAL.

He can relate.

Wednesday – Jesus is Betrayed.

Judas, one of Jesus’ innermost circle, agrees to turn him in.

Judas always had a thing with money. Greed.

And Satan knew Judas’ weakness.

And he preyed on it.

Thirty pieces of silver was all it took for Judas to betray the Savior of the world.

To hand him over to death.

Jesus knew betrayal at the highest level.

What’s unfathomable to us sometimes today is, He knew Judas would commit that betrayal, but he was invited to the table anyways.

Jesus washed Judas’ feet anyways.

Jesus loved Judas anyways.

And betrayal didn’t stop there.

Peter would go on to deny Jesus three times.

The man so steadfast and faithful for majority of Jesus’ ministry.

Arguably one of the closest to Jesus of the twelve.

But even still, the next night the rooster crowed following his three denials of Jesus.

Betrayal.

Sometimes it’s from those we would least expect, like Peter.

A long time friend offers you as the sacrifice, the brunt of the joke, to fit in with the crowd.

A family member betrays your trust.

Or even your child.

Your spouse betrays the vows you made together.

Betrayed because some days the beast of addiction is too big of a battle so the fix is chosen over you.

The “why am I not enough” feeling.

Sometimes it’s in our professional life.

Passed over for a promotion you’ve paid your dues for.

Credit taken for something your hard work was at the core of.

To be honest, there’s even betrayal in the church sometimes.

And have you ever felt betrayed by your own self?

You made a decision that is out of character for you, betraying the depths of who you truly are.

That may be one of the hardest to let go of.

You don’t feel safe in a certain room the way you used to because of betrayal.

All of that in consideration -

I’d bet an experience with betrayal has popped into your head right about now.

So how did you respond to it?

Did you ask that person to exit?

Exit the table, exit the room, exit your office, exit the church, exit your life?

Did you quietly just exit yourself but find yourself holding onto the hurt?

Did you love them anyways?

Jesus wasn’t necessarily safe in that room with Judas anymore.

Judas would use his “in” as a disciple to lead the chief priests straight to Jesus the very next night and betray him with a kiss.

But Jesus loved him anyways.

He broke bread with him anyways.

He washed his feet anyways.

Jesus had forgiven Judas for something he hadn’t even done yet.

Jesus wasn’t enough for Judas in that moment.

But what Judas didn’t consider was Jesus was the only thing he needed.

Not thirty measly pieces of silver.

Jesus is more than enough.

All you’ll ever need.

And you are more than enough for Jesus.

The hurt of betrayal runs deep.

And its wounds can be tough to heal.

But if anyone can sit with you in the sting of betrayal, it’s Jesus.

Your wound isn’t too deep for Jesus to heal.

He’s there in solidarity during the hurt of betrayal and He’s there in your surrender of it.

He’s there for the REAL.

He can relate.

Tuesday - Jesus is teaching.

Back in the city again and back in a cleansed and restored temple, Jesus spends the day teaching.

He spends the day unraveling the truth.

You see, the religious leaders wanted so badly to trap Jesus in his words.

To trap Him in their twisted version of the truth, to discredit Him.

They asked loaded questions, manipulated words to catch Him in a lie, to humiliate Him.

All to justify themselves and their actions and to sway the people to their side.

But they failed.

They were trapped in truth.

Jesus was wrapped in truth.

But did it feel tricky to Jesus?

Was it uncomfortable to be faced head on like that?

Did He feel backed into a corner?

Trying to put together the right words to tip toe through the traps they’d set for him in their questioning.

Trying to formulate answers that will lead people to the father without falling into the snares of the Sadducees at the same time.

I imagine Him standing in the temple pondering for just a moment after each question, making sure what He said next was perfectly crafted.

And all the while, Jesus didn’t back down.

He didn’t shy away from it to keep the peace, He didn’t disappear into the shadows so He wouldn’t ruffle any feathers.

We have the same unfortunate reality today as Christians.

We’re wrapped in the truth of the gospel but trapped in the snares the world sets for us in their questioning and attempts to discredit it.

But we’re not Jesus.

We don’t always know exactly what to say.

Our minds can’t formulate the perfect responses that Jesus’ could.

And if we're being honest -

Sometimes it just feels easier to put our faith in our back pocket when we walk into a certain room, when we’re around certain people.

Sometimes Christianity feels like you’re at war, not with the truth but FOR the truth.

And sometimes, even though we’re wrapped in the truth, we feel trapped in the truth and backed into a corner because the world can just be cruel.

We’re trapped in the unrealistic expectation that we as Christians are supposed to be perfect.

But we aren’t.

And when our imperfections show, that is what the world holds on to.

To justify to themselves that we’re wrong about Him altogether.

That we’re hypocrites.

One wrong move, one wrong word and they’ve taken it and ran like a Baptist on the way home to their casserole after Sunday service.

But really it’s to justify themselves to keep running from the Lord.

To keep denying the truth.

The enemy lies around every corner and uses every avenue he can to throw a wrench in your credibility as a Christian and the credibility of the Savior still today.

But we can’t back down.

We can’t shy away from the truth or hide our light under a bushel to keep the peace.

We can’t leave Jesus on the closet shelf when we leave for work.

We can’t leave Jesus in the car when we go into a restaurant.

We can’t leave Jesus in our pocket around certain friends or family members.

Shielding ourselves from scrutiny could mean shielding others from a Savior.

But sometimes, without even realizing it, that’s what we do.

And though Jesus didn’t, He stood boldly in the truth of the gospel, He understands the pressure.

He understands being wrapped in truth but trapped in the snares the world will try to set for you.

So if anyone can sit with you when you’re battling the boldness of your faith, its Jesus.

He’s there in solidarity when you feel backed in a corner and He’s there in your surrender to stand firm in the truth despite the world.

He’s there for the REAL.

He can relate.

Monday - Jesus cleanses the temple.

The tables have turned.

Literally and figuratively, emotionally.

Jesus cleanses the temple from the merchant mess going on.

He wasn’t happy about it.

You know he couldn’t have been cool calm and collected to be tossing tables.

There had to be some umph behind that from somewhere and odds are it was a little bit of anger.

Now, our anger is different from the anger of the Lord.

And maybe that’s the problem and where we need to reel it in.

Slow to anger, like the Bible instructs, is fine until we just can’t take it anymore.

Combustion. And a path of destruction follows if we aren’t careful.

I’m sure that temple didn’t look like HGTV had walked in there.

Tables everywhere, goods all over the ground, livestock running all over the place thinking it was their chance to bolt.

Can you imagine the ruin and destruction Jesus left behind when He walked out of there?

But rightly so.

See, the Lord’s anger ONLY brings righteousness.

Restoration. Just as He brought the temple that day.

Restoration to a house of prayer.

I mean, Jesus turned right around and started healing people after that, talk about the flip of a switch.

But that isn’t what happens when we get angry.

Righteousness and restoration are usually nowhere near.

If we're not careful destruction follows. We leave ruin behind.

Maybe it’s work, maybe it’s your home life – your children or your spouse, maybe it’s the feeling that you’re never going to “make it”.

Life is always stacked against you. You get back up only to be knocked right back down again.

Maybe it’s church hurt or a recent diagnosis that will change the trajectory of your life forever and your anger wonders "why me?"

Maybe it’s overwhelm or the weight of expectations that snowballs into anger.

Or maybe it just comes out that way upon explosion of a hundred different feelings you've been bottling up.

But nonetheless.

Anger isn’t usually an emotion we tie with Jesus. But He felt it.

And if anyone can sit with you in yours, it’s Jesus.

Your anger isn’t too big for Jesus.

He’s there in solidarity during your anger and He’s there in your surrender of it.

He’s there for the REAL.

He can relate.
