HOLINESS – ARE YOU AFRAID TO BE DIFFERENT?

“7 But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart” (1 Samuel 16:7.)

1 Samuel 16:7 has been and is now used by the ignorant to answer those of us who adhere to and teach godly outward holiness. They argue God looks at the heart and not on outward appearance. Of course they are pushing back against women wearing pants, jewelry, and makeup in addition to modest clothing. But that conclusion is contrary to the context of 1 Samuel 16:7.

The popular and common (mis)understanding of 1 Samuel 16:7 is dispelled by the context of 1 Samuel 16:1:

“And the LORD said unto Samuel, How long wilt thou mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? fill thine horn with oil, and go, I will send thee to Jesse the Bethlehemite: for I have provided me a king among his sons.”

God instructs Samuel to seek a replacement for King Saul from among the sons of Jesse. Look at verse 6 that reads:

“6 And it came to pass, when they were come, that he looked on Eliab, and said, Surely the LORD's anointed is before him.”

As most people are prone to do, Samuel was attracted to a person who looks the part whether by countenance, handsomeness, or regal appearance. But God corrected that physical misapprehension saying:

“…Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him…” (verse 7a.)

1 Samuel 16:7 has nothing whatsoever to do with a Christian’s outward appearance because kingly character is not based on outward physical appearance. It is based entirely on the content of the inward heart, i.e. “…the LORD looketh on the heart.”

Leviticus 19:2 says:

“2 Speak unto all the congregation of the children of Israel, and say unto them, Ye shall be holy: for I the LORD your God am holy.”

God’s holiness transformation begins inwardly – in the mind. Romans 12:2 reads:

“2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”

Can any person claim to be transformed – born again – and not refuse the outward appearance dictated by today’s society such as Hollywood, the fashion industry, and the jewelry and cosmetics industries? Keep in mind that if it quacks like a duck and walks like a duck then it must be a duck. If a professing believer claiming the born-again experience dresses in the accoutrements of the world, i.e. looks like the world, he (or she) is yet undoubtedly part of the world. A TRUE Holy Ghost transformation will compel a likewise change in outward appearance.

My nine siblings and I were truly blessed when it comes to home training regarding holiness outward adorning. Our father preached and taught the apostles’ doctrine with respect to not just water baptism in the name of Jesus Christ and the oneness of God, but outward holiness too. My six sisters were taught to NOT wear pants in violation of Deuteronomy 22:5, to dress modestly (1 Timothy 2:9,) and to not wear any jewelry or makeup (Jeremiah 4:30.)

What if my sisters rebelled against this holiness teaching and reject it despite what scripture says? What does God say about that? Here is what He says:

“23 For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king” (1 Samuel 15:23.)

To reject what has been clearly taught is in the eyes of God rebellion. And rebellion is AS the SIN of witchcraft. This rejection is also stubbornness. Stubbornness is AS iniquity AND idolatry.
God has a clear line of demarcation between what is done in ignorance and what is done despite having clear knowledge. Consider James 4:17:

“Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.”

My sisters KNOW to do good (that which is righteous.) Their continuance in modeling the world in outward appearance reveals an unwillingness to stand against worldliness. I often wonder why that is? Are they fearful of being rejected by likeminded professing women believers? (Everyone dresses this way.) Do they believe that what they have been taught is wrong or that it is not at all as important as the Word of God says it is? Or perhaps they believe that this refusal to dress in holiness is not as weighty an issue as is repentance and being baptized in the name of Jesus Christ? But whatever the reason, the scriptures have an answer.

James 2:10 reads:

“10 For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.”

While I will not argue that some commandments are not as weighty as others, I will not say that God allows the believer to judge what carries more weight and obey them alone. 1 John 5:17 says:

“All unrighteousness is sin: and there is a sin not unto death.”

Jesus asks a reasonable question:

“46 And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?” (Luke 6:46)

Here is another consideration. Women are constantly usurping the authority of the man contrary to 1 Timothy 2:12. Because women are drawn to teach, why not teach under the circumstances that God allows? Here is a scripture that allows certain women to teach:

“3 The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things; 4 That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, 5 To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed” (Titus 2:3-5.)

The “aged women” are women who are mature or “senior citizens.” There is a severe shortage of aged women because most of them, including the younger women, are flooding the ranks of preachers, elders, bishops, pastors, evangelists, and deaconesses. My sisters fit this needed category.

Look at our younger women. They are an embarrassment to even Christian families. They are not being taught to be discreet, chaste, keepers of the home, good, and obedient to THEIR OWN husbands. They are also not being taught to love their husbands or their children. Women from even Christian families are being seduced by male hormone driven men and made pregnant while others are being seduced by le****ns.

WRAPPING UP

Wake up women! Many of you are an embarrassment to God and your families. The world is providing negative role models for your ungodly behavior and your Jezebel-like appearance.

Now to you “Christian” aged women. Fill in the huge gaps of teachers needed in today’s rapidly growing society. Begin occupying the mostly empty ranks of teachers in your local churches so that our girls and women can get saved and fulfill the role that God has for them in the home and church.

ALL POWER AND AUTHORITY GIVEN TO THE SON

“18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth” (Matthew 28:18.)

We all know that Jesus Christ died to save sinful man from his sin. A man – Adam – willfully disobeyed God’s explicit commandment to not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil:

“16 And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: 17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die” (Genesis 2:16-17, Read also Romans 5:12, 14.)

God’s violated eternal law necessitates the shedding of innocent blood to pay for sin. Hebrews 9:22 reads:

“22 And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.”

The Old Testament law of Moses provided the shed blood of lambs to temporarily atone for sin.

(In order for there to be a permanent solution, an innocent descendant of Adam had to pay the price. Not only must needs the man be innocent, but he also had to be one hundred percent human. Hence the Old Testament prophecies of a future Son of God, i.e. Isaiah 7:14, 9:6. This Son of God HAD to be God Himself. Look at Isaiah 59:16:

“16 And he saw that there was no man, and wondered that there was no intercessor: therefore his (God) arm brought salvation unto him; and his righteousness, it sustained him.)

The Son of God WAS a complete man and had the limitations of a man except for sin (Romans 8:3.) Jesus revealed His limitations by saying:

“28 Then said Jesus unto them, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself; but as my Father hath taught me, I speak these things” (John 8:28.)

We read also this:

“10 Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works 28 Ye have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again unto you. If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I” (John 14:10, 28.)

Let us summarize Jesus’ limitations as recorded in John 8:28, 14:10, 28:

(A) I do nothing OF MYSELF.
(B) The words that I speak unto you I speak NOT OF MYSELF.
(C) My Father is GREATER THAN I.

This Son of God had an earthly mother – Mary. Luke 1:26-28, 30-31 says:

“26 And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, 27 To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary. 28 And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women…30 And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God. 31 And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name Jesus.”

Jesus remained related to Mary and humanity UNTIL His resurrection. Matthew 28:5-7 reads:

“5 And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified. 6 He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay. 7 And go quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead; and, behold, he goeth before you into Galilee; there shall ye see him: lo, I have told you.”

We read this of the post-resurrected Christ:

“39 Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have” (Luke 24:39.)

Jesus died flesh and BLOOD but arose flesh and bones. Philippians 3:21 reads:

“21 Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself.”

Jesus’ post resurrection body is stated to be “glorious.” But something else happened to Jesus when resurrected. Matthew 28:18 says:

“18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.”

What is the significance of “all power is given unto me in heaven and earth”?

Unquestionably, God has ALL power in heaven and earth. Because all power has been given to the Son of God, the Father is NO LONGER greater than He (John 14:28.) The body (Hebrews 10:5) – the flesh – the man Christ Jesus (1 Timothy 2:5) was made equal to the Spirit of God. The Father no longer dominated the Son because of the severe limitations of human kinship.

“49 And as we have borne the image of the earthy, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly. 50 Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption” (1 Corinthians 15:49-50.)

When resurrected, Jesus was transformed from flesh and blood to flesh and bones (Luke 24:39.) This was glorification when His terrestrial body was changed to a celestial body and made fit for heaven.

Acts 1:9-11 reads:

“9 And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight. 10 And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel; 11 Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.”

While he was being stoned, Stephen saw the resurrected Christ in heaven:

“55 But he, being full of the Holy Ghost, looked up stedfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God, 56 And said, Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God” (Acts 7:55-56.)

Stephen saw Jesus Christ in His resurrected body standing in all glory, power, and authority. (Note that He was yet referred to as the Son of man.)

HE SAW GOD!

WRAPPING UP

“Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD” (Deuteronomy 6:4.)
Here is what John saw when he was taken in the spirit of heaven:

“And immediately I was in the spirit: and, behold, a throne was set in heaven, and one sat on the throne” (Revelation 4:2.)

Stephen saw the selfsame God that John saw. Jesus sat on the throne in heaven in His glorified body. ONE GOD!

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS AN ATHEIST

“The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good” (Psalm 14:1.)

This statement is so unquestionably true, so profound that the Holy Ghost included it in the scriptures twice, i.e. Psalm 53:1:

“The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. Corrupt are they, and have done abominable iniquity: there is none that doeth good.”

Look at John 1:9:

“9 That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.”

“Light” is truth, knowledge. It is given (lighteth) to “every man that cometh into the world.” As an artist, painter, or sculptor identifies his work of art by his name, so too has God acknowledged that His prized creation, man, is the work of His hands. This is the reason that God declares Himself to be a jealous God:

“5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD (Yahweh) thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me” (Exodus 20:5.)

John 1:9 can be described as “innate (inborn) knowledge.” The implanted knowledge of the absolute existence of God is the most prominent of all that God has placed within man. It dominates.

This truth is evident by studying ancient civilizations. Man has always acknowledged the existence of God although if truth be told he has always defaulted to the acknowledgement of multiple gods in his pursuit of polytheism. Sometimes this acknowledgement was in the form of manmade deities made of stone or metal or the sun.

The apostle Paul provides us with one of the most compelling arguments for the existence of God in the scriptures. He wrote:

“18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness” (Romans 1:18.)

Let us examine the phrase “who hold the truth in unrighteousness.”
To “hold the truth in unrighteousness” means to suppress the truth. To be able to suppress the truth one must first have it – be aware of it.

“19 Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them” (Romans 1:19.)

Verse 19 amplifies what is recorded in verse 18 by making this truth not only indisputable but impossible to justifiably or logically deny it. God’s existence “is manifest in them (all the naysayers and deniers.) “Manifest” means to reveal or to uncover. And as if this declaration needs any more emphasis, the final phrase of verse 19 says that God has shown His truth to man.

I have meditated on Romans 1:18-19 many times. Considering what is recorded here, I find it impossible to understand how anyone can confess the nonexistence of God. The only explanation I can rationally accept from those blind sceptics and university-trained and graduated students is that they have trained or conditioned their minds over time to block out the innate knowledge of the existence of God. When a lie is constantly rehearsed it inevitably becomes truth.

Now let us bring Romans 1:28 into our discussion. It reads:

“28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate (debased, unprincipled) mind, to do those things which are not convenient.”

The person who makes up in his mind to discount the existence of God will eventually find himself (or herself) in a state of mind from which there is no return. God will give him over to a debased mind essentially giving up on him. This individual is hell bound by his own choice. This is the reason God labels him a fool.

WRAPPING UP

The word atheist does not exist in God’s dictionary. The person who vigorously denies that God exists does so willingly and purposely. He makes it a personal desire. This individual cannot be labeled stupid or intellectually challenged. He chose to disavow the very knowledge God has given him. He is a fool and all fools will have their part in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone.

JESUS ALONE HAS THE WORDS OF ETERNAL LIFE

“40 And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life” (John 5:40.)

There are a handful of TV commercials that made an impression on me during the long-ago past days of over the air analog transmissions. Here is one that I find appropriate for illustration of today’s Bible lesson (E.F. Hutton, late 1970s):

A passenger on an airline speaks to another passenger across the aisle from him, saying…

“Now that looks like a very interesting situation. My broker is really enthusiastic about it. What does your broker say?”

“Well, my broker is E.F. Hutton, and E.F. Hutton says…”

Every passenger within earshot of these gentlemen suddenly stops what they are doing, comes to attention and listens attentively to the answer of the E.F. Hutton client.

I find this old television commercial apropos (appropriate) for application to the message of the salvation of Jesus Christ. On one memorable occasion Jesus found Himself in a contentious conversation with the Jews. He had healed a man who had an infirmity for thirty-eight years (John 5:1-5.) But it was the sabbath. It was for this reason the Jews sought to accuse Jesus.

“10 The Jews therefore said unto him that was cured, It is the sabbath day: it is not lawful for thee to carry thy bed…18 Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God” (John 5:10, 18.)

John 5:40 is immediately preceded by these words of Jesus:

“38 And ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him ye believe not. 39 Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me” (John 5:38-39.)

Here is where I am equating the words of the E.F. Hutton client to Jesus’ words, i.e. accusation, recorded in John 5:40. The Jews should have immediately ceased their accusation and ignorance displayed before Jesus, become silent and listen attentively.

One day Jesus declared to the disciples (NOT the twelve) that they would have to eat His flesh and drink His blood (John 6:51-65.) What was their reaction?

“66 From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him” (John 6:66.)

Peter answered:

“68 Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life” (John 6:68.)

I have always believed and said that what Jesus said in John 5:40 are the absolute saddest words He had ever spoken. Here it is again:

“40 And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life” (John 5:40.)

Many people had rather become enraptured by the words of the Word of faith televangelists such as T.D. Jakes, Creflo Dollar, Joyce Meyer, etc. and those of fake Christian Oprah Winfrey and popular actors and singers like pseudo–Christians Denzel Washington and recently deceased singer Dolly Parton. But 2 Timothy 2:22 says:

“22 FLEE also youthful lusts: but FOLLOW righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.”

People are pursuing the popular doctrine of prosperity and materialism and are totally blind to eternal life. Jesus taught:

“19 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: 20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal” (Matthew 6:19-20.)

Financial brokers are determined to give their clients a great return on investment. That was the purpose of that old E.F. Hutton TV commercial. But think soberly about this. What greater return on investment can anyone obtain than eternal life? Jesus asks this rhetorical question:

“36 For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” (Mark 8:36)

WRAPPING UP

We, ALL of us, have an appointed time in this life (Hebrews 9:27.) None of us know or will ever learn when this time or date is. Jesus advises:

“44 Therefore BE YE ALSO READY: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh” (Matthew 24:44.)

BEAUTY DOES NOT COME IN A BOTTLE

“30 And when Jehu was come to Jezreel, Jezebel heard of it; and she painted her face, and tired her head, and looked out at a window” (2 Kings 9:30.)

Hollywood is inarguably the largest and most prominent advertiser for the jewelry and cosmetics industry. It veritably dictates to the public what is fashionable for women wear and apply to the body such as the lips, cheeks, toenails and fingernails, and eyes. As a matter of fact, various cosmetics manufacturers have the advantage of free advertising of their products through Hollywood.

We can reasonably say that both Hollywood and the cosmetics industries have set the standard of beauty for the American woman. Cosmetics are universally advertised through movies and television programming. It is unavoidable. But this is all part of the evil world system. The scripture says this of the world:

“17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you” (2 Corinthians 6:17.)

Also, we have 1 John 2:15-16:

“15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.”

Unfortunately, the average girl and woman is at a distinct disadvantage at being protected from Hollywood and television makeup programming. And we are all, not just women, helpless victims of this advertising and it is publicly seen all around us from the school system, workplace, church, sports, and throughout the average neighborhood.

But we should all be reminded that cosmetics are the primary products for two professions – circus clowns and the ubiquitous (everywhere present) pr******te or harlot. Think about it. No woman wishes to think or entertain in her mind that the makeup she uses is the unquestioned trademark for two, shall we say, “professions” lacking dignity and/or any moral compass.

Unwittingly women have been made or subtly coerced into being willing victims for what the makeup industry and Hollywood have defined as beauty. And they have not been given any say-so or the opportunity to evaluate this man-defined standard of beauty.

Would it be reasonable to think that God has a say-so or an alternative standard of beauty for the woman? Or did He leave it up to man, His creature, to make up his own standard? As the all-knowing inventor of mankind, you would logically think that God made the male and the female as His all-knowing nature and standard think appropriate to conform to His desire.

When creation, including man, was complete, God made the following assessment:

“And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day” (Genesis 1:31.)

Everything on both man and woman were declared to be complete, nothing lacking. Both were found to be whole and beautiful in His eyes. As a matter of fact, Adam and Eve were prototypes of masculine and feminine beauty. The woman’s eyes were declared to be perfect, not needing any type of lining or shadowing for any type of enhancement. The pronouncement “very good” means a standard of completeness and beauty that could not be improved upon.

When you think soberly about makeup, it in a not so subtle a manner declares that God left room for improvement. That thought is an insult!

What do the scriptures say? 1 Peter 3:4 reads:

“4 But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.”

Womanly beauty is defined more from that which cannot be seen by the naked eye than any outward appearance. The “hidden man of the heart” and “the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit” is more important to God than face, fingernail, and toenail paint.

“4 For the LORD taketh pleasure in his people: he will beautify the meek with salvation” (Psalm 149:4.)

Note that God WILL NOT beautify His people with eyeshadow enhancement and rouge for the cheeks. Women who are meek God will make beautiful with salvation. And notice that meekness rather than face painting again plays a prominent role in beauty.

“17 I know also, my God, that thou triest the heart, and hast pleasure in uprightness. As for me, in the uprightness of mine heart I have willingly offered all these things: and now have I seen with joy thy people, which are present here, to offer willingly unto thee” (1 Chronicles 29:17.)

The beauty that God desires of His people lies on the inside. There is a famous saying that “beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” This is so true. Different peoples – different cultures – have varying standards of beauty. What Americans find beautiful is perceived as ugly by some people groups. But inner beauty is perceived universally.

“40 And furthermore, that ye have sent for men to come from far, unto whom a messenger was sent; and, lo, they came: for whom thou didst wash thyself, paintedst thy eyes, and deckedst thyself with ornaments” (Ezekiel 23:40.)

“30 And when thou art spoiled, what wilt thou do? Though thou clothest thyself with crimson, though thou deckest thee with ornaments of gold, though thou rentest thy face with painting, in vain shalt thou make thyself fair; thy lovers will despise thee, they will seek thy life” (Jeremiah 4:30.)

“30 And when Jehu was come to Jezreel, Jezebel heard of it; and she painted her face, and tired her head, and looked out at a window” (2 Kings 9:30.)

Consider the light that Ezekiel 23:40 and Jeremiah 4:30 portray the woman who decks herself in ornaments and tons of “face paint” in. These passages scream HARLOT” at the top of their lungs. And note the objective of the jewels and makeup – for the woman to make herself “fair,” seductive, beautiful, to her lovers. This is hardly a godly pursuit.

This is the universal Jezebel look. It is as ungodly as a woman can become.

WRAPPING UP

Contrary to what the cosmetics industry and Hollywood think or have you believe, beauty does not come in a bottle or through appliances or attachments for the eyes to make a woman more attractive. Cosmetics make a woman look fake – artificial and jewelry make her look like female gods and seductresses. It detracts from the godly woman God made her to be and introduces s*x into the equation – think pr******te or harlot.

“27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish” (Ephesians 5:27.)

Cosmetics and jewelry are spots and wrinkles that are among the world’s ungodly attractions. Do not be devil-deceived into believing that God will settle for anything less than the standard He has set. There will be two opposed classes of people when He returns for His church – the holy and the unholy. These classes will be easily distinguishable internally and through the outward appearance. And make no mistake about it, a man and a woman who has been truly born again will NEVER be mistaken outwardly as unholy. NEITHER will look like Jezebel.

WASHING AWAY YOUR SINS THROUGH WATER BAPTISM

“16 And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord” (Acts 22:16.)

Acts 22:16 is a part of the apostle Paul’s testimony of his conversion from Judaism to the Christian faith – the “road to Damascus” testimony.” For context, this is how it began:

“3 I am verily a man which am a Jew, born in Tarsus, a city in Cilicia, yet brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, and taught according to the perfect manner of the law of the fathers, and was zealous toward God, as ye all are this day…14 And he said, The God of our fathers hath chosen thee, that thou shouldest know his will, and see that Just One, and shouldest hear the voice of his mouth. 15 For thou shalt be his witness unto all men of what thou hast seen and heard” (Acts 22:3, 14-15.)

How many believers have ever thought of the water baptism of Acts 2:38 as being the removal of past acts of sins through the washing away by water? Think about this comparison to the physical removal of the filth of the body by soap and water. But isn’t this an apt metaphor for a normal personal act that we all perform daily?

Let us NOT confuse sin, namely nature, with repeated acts of sin, i.e. sins. Psalm 51:5 says:

“5 Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.”

This is Adam’s inherited nature we all acquire at conception. We are one and all free from acts of sin (sins) at birth. It is only when we begin to grow that we commit acts of sin in thought and deed. This is the reason Acts 2:38 says:

“…be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the REMISSION of SINS…”

Acts 22:16 allows us to understand “remission” as being a “washing away of sins.” A washing away is a spiritual removal that can only be accomplished through the power inherent in the name of Jesus Christ.

Let us now turn our attention to Peter’s first epistle (letter):

“20 Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were SAVED BY WATER. 21 The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ” (1 Peter 3:20-21.)

A global washing away was first performed by God through a massive flood brought on by the unthinkable evil initiated by the act of the sons of God having s*xual relations with the daughters of men (Genesis 6:1-4):

“5 And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. 6 And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart” (Genesis 6:5-6.)

The Holy Ghost through Peter categorized this global flood as an Old Testament shadow of the New Testament fulfillment, i.e. “like figure.” And notice that 1 Peter 3:21 is careful to mention that water baptism is not to be confused with “the putting away of the filth of the flesh.” This is due to the physical nature of washing as relatable to the spiritual act of the removal of sins. The global flood can be thought of as the washing away of the physical contamination brought about by the emergence of the incredibly evil giants (Nephilim) and their negative influence on humanity. Flood waters literally swept or washed away all remnants of the giants.

The apostle Paul’s water baptism is literally called a washing away of his sins. Now do you begin to see why the name of Jesus Christ must be verbally invoked? (And conversely why calling on the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost is ineffective.) Acts 4:12 reads:

“12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.”

Salvation is efficacious SOLELY THROUGH the name of Jesus Christ and wholly meaningless by calling on the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost.

Realizing the truth behind water baptism brings to the surface that despite how ignorant trinitarian theologians make light of water baptism relative to repentance, baptism ALONG WITH repentance is a necessary requirement for salvation! Water baptism according to a right dividing of the scriptures (2 Timothy 2:15) places it on an equal footing with repentance.

Can you imagine being taken to the kingdom of God at Jesus’ second advent (coming) not having your sins WASHED AWAY? That means God allowing a person into His holy kingdom carrying unrepentant sins. This can happen in one of two ways:

(A) Through neglecting to be water baptized at all.
(B) Through omission of the name of Jesus Christ being called out, i.e. in the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost.

Either one of the above scenarios will prevent the fulfillment of Ephesians 5:27:

“27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.”

An unfulfilled water baptism (spot or wrinkle) through disobedience to Acts 2:38 guarantees eternal doom to any person at Christ’s return. Jesus WILL NOT present such a contaminated person to Himself. Such neglect will ensure an eternal post in the lake of fire.

WRAPPING UP

No one can have his or her sins washed away through any name OTHER THAN Jesus Christ (Acts 2:38) OR Acts 19:5. No title is a viable substitute.

Have you been washed?
