“A healthy church is not a church that’s perfect and without sin. Rather, it’s a church that continually seeks to conform itself to God’s Word.” — Mark Dever

The mark of a healthy church isn’t perfection. It’s faithfulness to Scripture.

Every church is made up of sinners who are still being sanctified. There will be weaknesses, disagreements, and areas in need of repentance. But what distinguishes a healthy church is its willingness to continually submit to the authority of God’s Word.

A healthy church doesn’t reshape Scripture to accommodate the culture, its traditions, or the preferences of its members. It allows Scripture to correct, reform, and shape everything it believes and practices.

The question isn’t whether our churches have flaws. They do. The question is whether we’re willing to let God’s Word expose those flaws and bring us into greater conformity to Christ.

The goal isn’t a church that claims to have arrived, but one that is continually being reformed by the Word of God.

The same season can harden one heart and soften another. Trials don’t automatically make us better they reveal what we’re allowing God to produce in us.

A difficult season can make you bitter, or it can make you wiser. It can make you withdraw, or teach you deeper dependence on God. It can expose wounds you didn’t know were there and invite Him to heal what you’ve been carrying.

So don’t only ask, “When will this season end?” Ask, “Who am I becoming while I’m in it?”

Pay attention to what your trials are producing in you. Let God use the pressure to deepen your faith, refine your character, and soften your heart.

You may not be able to choose the season, but you can choose what you allow God to build.

Sometimes the purest worship is a broken heart that still bows, a weary spirit that still whispers His name,
and a wounded soul that still chooses obedience.

Paul understood the importance of prayer when he asked the church to pray for him.

Pray for us. — Hebrews 13:18

What a simple request, yet what a powerful reminder that even those who lead others spiritually need the prayers of God’s people.

So don’t just receive from your pastor. Pray for him.

Pray for his walk with God.

Pray for his marriage and family.

Pray for his physical and emotional strength.

Pray that he will never become so busy serving God’s people that he neglects his own soul.

Pray for protection from temptation, discouragement, pride, and anything that could pull him away from God’s purpose.

And when you can, encourage him. Check on him. Be patient with him. Support him as he serves.

Don’t wait until your pastor breaks down to remember that he needs support.

You may never know how much your prayers mean. You may never see the battles they help him endure.

But never underestimate what God can do through the sincere prayers of His people.

Your pastor spends time carrying others before God. Make it your privilege to carry him before God, too.

He may be the one who prays for everyone else.

What happens when what we want and what God wants are not the same?

It’s easy to say, “Lord, Your will be done.” But what happens when His will challenges our plans, our desires, or our need to be in control?

In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus prayed some of the most powerful words ever spoken: “Yet not my will, but yours be done.” (Luke 22:42)

Those words weren’t spoken in a moment of comfort, but in the shadow of the cross.

This Sunday, we’re continuing our series HE MUST INCREASE as we discover what it really means to surrender our will to God. Because Jesus cannot increase in our lives while we insist on having the final say.
